Sarnoff Author Index 225 Subject Index 229 Copyrighted Material Acknowledgments The idea for this volume grew out of a symposium held in March of 1983 by the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine in collaboration with the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research on the treatment of difficult characters, organized under the guidance of the then president of the Association, Dr. Paul Bradlow. The focus of this symposium was on the understanding and treat ment of severely masochistic and narcissistic characters. It was at the suggestion of Dr. Helen Meyers, who pointed to the lack in the psychoanalytic literature of a comprehensive volume on contempo rary views of masochism, that we decided to undertake this book. Taking a point of departure the symposium presentations on maso chistic pathology and its treatment, we expanded and supplemented them with contributions by other authorities in the field. We wish to thank the committee that organized the symposium: Drs. Arnold Rothstein (Chairman), Paul Bradlow, Arnold Cooper, Gerald Fogel, Otto Kernberg, Roger MacKinnon, Helen Meyers, Rob ert Michels, and Roy Schafer, as well as those other participants of the symposium whose contributions were not included in this vol ume: Drs. Frederick Lane, Roger MacKinnon, Robert Michels, Arnold Rothstein, and Daniel Stern. There are few people in particular whose help with their clinical and theoretical wisdom, ideas, and insights deserves special men tion. They are Drs. Gerald Fogel, Roger MacKinnon, Helen Meyers, and Samuel Perry. We also appreciate very much the encouragement and support for this project provided by the current president of the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine, Dr. Robert Liebert, and by the publication committee of the Association under the chairmanship of Dr. Stanley Coen. We are further grateful to Dr. Paul Stepansky for his encourage ment in bringing this volume to life, and we are greatly indebted to Eleanor Starke Kobrin for her patience and invaluable editorial help in its creation. vii Copyrighted Material viii Acknowledgments Finally, Terry Montgomery, the administrative secretary of the Association, deserves our most profound appreciation for her tireless dedication and resiliency under fire in the actual completion of this enterprise. -The Editors Copyrighted Material Contributors STUART S.
