LETTER
Changeisaconstantinanyvibrantinstitution,andwehavehad
ourshareoverthelastyears.Therearemoments,however,that
bringmomentous,significant,arrestingchange.Theymakeus
pauseandponder.JimLott'sretirementissuchamoment.Itwasonly
oneyearafterIcametoMaryBaldwinCollegethatDr.JamesD.Lott
becamethedeanofthecollege,thechiefacademicofficer,themostsig-
nificant,mostformativepersoninshapingtheacademiclifeofMBC.
Bringingwithhimmuchpromise,hearousedourgreatestexpecta-
tions... andheliveduptoallofthemall.Over 15years,hehas
providedoutstandiiigleadershipandstabilityas
wehavesailedforthinmagnificentacademic
ways.Histenurehasseenusevolveasacollege
andfirmlyestablishtheProgramfortheExcep-
tionallyGifted,growvigorouslyintheAdult
DegreeProgram,andcreatetheVirginia
Women'sInstituteforLeadership.Heledthe
establishmentoftheMasterofArtsinTeaching
program,butdidnotstopthere.Throughits
accreditationinJanuary 1993,helaidthefoun-

THE VIRGINIA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP (VWIL)
graduated its first class from Mary Baldwin College in May 1999. The program's
designers anticipated that graduates would seek positions ofresponsibility in their commu-
nities and careerfields. They knew that the unique experience was not only a tine liberal arts
education, but preparationfor the challenges ofthe world ofwork as well. Now, six years since
the program's inception, we look at where those pioneers are today.

Nashville,TN.Thereitonlytookhertwoweekstolandajobasanofficeassis-
tantwiththeartistmanagementcompanyBormanEntertainment.The
companyrepresentsFaithHill,TraceAdkins,Lonestar,DwightYoakam,and
JamesTaylor."1knowthatwithoutthedemandsofVWILandthecommitment

WhenKimgraduated,shecommissionedintheMarineCorpsandreported
immediatelytoTheBasicSchoolatQuantico,VA.Thereshereceivedherfirst
pickofdutystationandcareerfield:communicationsofficeratCampPendle-
ton,SanDiego,CA.SixmonthslatershegraduatedfromBasicSchooland
wenttoworkatAmphibiousWarfareSchoolforfourmonths,thenenteredthe
CommunicationsandInformationSystemsCourse.Sheisnowtheradioplatoon
commander,AlphaCompany,9thCommunicationsBattalion, 1stMarineExpe-
ditionaryForce.Herplatoonprovidesalltheradiotransmissionmeanstothe1st
MarineExpeditionaryBrigade.
