0 Geoff Pilling, leading Marxist theoretician makes just such analyses in this collection of
at essays, which he was preparing for publication before his death in 1997. In an essay remarka-
] bly prescient of today’s situation, he analyses the crises of post- war capitalism. Other essays

it in the book explain fundamental concepts of Marx’s analysis of capitalism, their irreconcila-

r bility with Keynes’s theoretical system, and refute the contention that all Marxist theoretical

v development post-M arx was distorted by Stalinism. Pilling also shows how problems in

U British capitalism were the forerunners of those in world capitalism. And he defends Engels’s
s contention that the greatest significance of the industrial revolution was the development of a

t working class that was forced to fight against its conditions of oppression.

it Geoff Pilling was a prominent political economist

U who devoted his life to the achievement of socialism

y and a ‘truly human society’. Geoff taught Economics
b at Sheffield and Bradford Universities and at Middle-

e sex Polytechnic (later University), where he devel-
d oped an MA in Political Economy and was awarded a
a
o readership. In addition to a distinguished academic
l
n
w career, in which he published several books, he was a
o prolific writer in the left- wing press, including Labour
D
Review, Fourth International, Workers’ Press and the
Dockers Charter. He sadly died in 1997.
Doria Pilling was Geoff ’s wife and is an Honorary Geoff Pilling
Senior Fellow at the School of Health Sciences at
City University London, UK.
