What if one day, you took a different path, a bridge over instead of under? Could that change everything? Could you ever go back? For college student Justin Mayer, an ordinary day turns extraordinary when he finds himself in a world like, yet fundamentally unlike his own. Narrowly escaping the clutches of a malevolent figure, he learns that this is a world ravaged by plague, and divided by holy war. At the center of the conflict: an ancient deity named Chaer-Ul, whose motives are anything but clear. What's more, it seems that Chaer-Ul’s followers see Justin as the incarnation of a legendary warrior they call “Martyr”. As the resistance makes a final stand against a dark enemy of unspeakable power, Justin must decide what he believes, and who he can trust. In the process, he will learn who he really is, and what price he must pay for love.

Review"Martyr is a brilliantly-conceived story and a great start to what promises to be an exciting new series! I honestly had trouble putting it down... the pacing is terrific, the action is spectacular, the deep artistry of creative imagination is utterly mesmerizing, and the romantic element is emotionally satisfying. New author N.P. Beckwith delivered a home run on his first attempt! Beckwith has created a fascinating world that I found myself wanting to personally explore... he has also successfully developed fascinating characters I really want to get to know better as the trilogy progresses.
The hero of Martyr is not an idealized role model, but a fallible and imperfect human being. There is much here for the reader to digest and grapple with. Can we or should we trust in a supreme being? Does he care about us and if so, why is darkness allowed to cause so much damage and destruction? What can or should we do if we are called to perform a duty we feel entirely incapable of handling? These are just some of the questions that popped up in my mind as I was reading.
The story is set in an alternate universe and while the world created by Beckwith is eerily familiar to the one in which we live, social customs and even the laws of physics are not necessarily the same as what we are used to in this world. In a few places, it may be required for the reader to suspend a certain degree of disbelief in order to fully appreciate the beauty of Beckwith's masterpiece. Rather than detract from the story, I believe this touch of "magic" is what makes Martyr an epic fantasy for a post-modern world!"
N. P. Beckwith is a professional chiropractor, former educator, casual artist, and undocumented theologian. Occasionally, on a dare, and at great risk to those he loves, he writes a novel. He believes that he who finds a wife finds a good thing, and that children are a heritage from the Lord. He is a world traveler, his conquests including Texas, Holland, India, Japan, and at least one alternate earth. He currently resides with his good thing and his heritage in his home state of Maine.
