Marriage and Family Therapy M A R R I AG E A PRACTICE-ORIENTED APPROACH and Linda Metcalf, PhD, LMFT, Editor FM FA M I LY “Each chapter will provide you, the reader, with background, assumptions and concepts, typical A interventions and practices, and evaluation strategies of a multitude of approaches to therapy…. A When you are finished…you will be able to understand the basis for family therapy and to integrate M ideas from the founding approaches, melding them into a coherence that will be all your own.” THER APY R —Thorana S. Nelson, PhD Emeritus Professor, Utah State University, Logan, Utah I (from the Foreword) R L “Linda Metcalf’s Marriage and Family Therapy text is an excellent book for novice therapists, YI students, as well as people like me who have practiced many years, because it offers very clear, concise, and easily understandable explanations of the major Marriage & Family Therapy theories. A I particularly liked the weaving of theory with case studies. Reading it brought back my early memories of why I became a Family Therapist.” T G —Michael L. Chafin, MDiv, MEd, LMFT H The Brookwood Center for Psychotherapy E E There are many different models of marriage and family therapy; the challenge for students and a beginning practitioners is deciding which one best suits their purposes. This highly practical R volume elucidates the defining characteristics of 14 contemporary models, including their history, n views of change, views of family and the role of the therapist; and methods of assessing family Ad dynamics, goal setting; facilitating change; and knowing when to terminate. Each chapter also includes realistic case studies—many drawn from actual practice—to illustrate how each model P would address common issues. Y In addition, the volume includes extensive interviews with master therapists such as Albert Ellis, Insoo Kim Berg, Sue Johnson, Susan McDaniel, Derald Wing Sue, and many others. They share their ideas of the ways in which change occurs, how they set goals, and how they perform therapy. KEY FEATURES: M • Introduces the theory, history, theoretical assumptions, techniques, and E components of each model T • Includes a template for using each model • Includes case study commentary and analysis by master therapists C • Suggests questions, therapeutic strategies, and/or comments to consider A A PRACTICE-ORIENTED for each therapeutic phase L APPROACH F ISBN 978-0-8261-0681-0 L I N D A M E T C A L F EDITOR 11 W. 42nd Street New York, NY 10036-8002 www.springerpub.com 9 780826 106810 Marriage and Family Therapy Linda Metcalf, PhD, LMFT, is a tenured professor of education and director of the School Counsel- ing Program at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas.
