It is the combined efforts of 17 authors, who in their respective fields are highly knowledge- ableandexperiencedprofessionals.Theauthorscomefromninecountries, indicating thewidescopeofexpertisedrawnupon.AfairnumberoftheseauthorsarefromSouth Africa, buttheirexperience isinternational. Thetitle,“MarineConcreteStructures:Design,DurabilityandPerformance,”sug- geststhatthemajorconcernofthebookisdurabilityofmarineconcreteinfrastructure andperformanceofthisinfrastructureinservice.Marinestructurescanbeexposedto some of the harshest environments on the planet. Despite this, many perform adequatelyfordecadesandlonger, whichisatestimony totheirdesign, construction andthematerialsusedtobuildthem.Nevertheless,withthelikelyincreaseinconstruc- tion of marine concrete infrastructure in the future, it is timely that a book like this should beconcerned with these important aspects. Thebookisuniqueinthatitbringstogetherinthreepartsaspectssuchasdesignand specification, constructionmethodologiesandchallenges;performanceandproperties, includingdurabilityanddeterioration;andacomprehensivecollectionofcasestudies of significant marine concrete structures. These include, inter alia, the Confederation BridgeinCanada,DanishStraitCrossings, marinasintheGulfregion, largeandsmall harbor structuresand the new Panama Canal. I am hugely indebted to all the authors who gave unstintingly of their time and expertise in writing the specialist chapters for this book. Their names are given in therespectivechapters.IalsoacknowledgeDr.JamesMackechnieforvaluableinfor- mationthat he provided onthe Simonstown Jettyin Chapter 14. Lastly,IwishtothanktheWoodheadeditorialandproductionteam:GwenJones, Kate Hardcastle and Charlotte Cockle.
