We were fortunate enough to take a gondola ride, which was a very relaxing, and enjoyable experience. From the gondola, the Rialto could be viewed. On the beach in Venice, a number of students played hide and go seek where they, according to Will Orford, managed not to (cid:147)get mugged, shot and/or raped(cid:148). Upon arriving in Florence, (cid:147)David(cid:148) and many churches were seen. It proved to be a great place to shop. Big spenders included Maddy Reardon and Vanessa Currie. The group also made an excursion to Pisa, where they of course saw the (cid:147)Leaning Tower of Pisa(cid:148) and the baptistery. The Chinese name writers in Florence followed and harassed us throughout our first day there. We also went clubbing, which was an experience in itself. In the alleyway just before the club, many Italian men tried to stop the girls in our group, one even shoved Jed Cabilete out of the way to get to Mariel Hunter. They hooted and hollered as the group walked by. Everyone had tons fun throughout the evening. However, the highlight of the night was when Jed defeated all challengers and was king of the Italian dance floor for a night. In Assisi, we walked through St Francis(cid:146)s cathedral with a monk. Our lunch hours are too short(cid:133)actually they are not even an hour. Many students feel that if it is going to be called (cid:147)lunch hour(cid:148) then it should be at least an hour long. Jeff Walsh said (cid:147)I think that our lunch hours are ok, but they really should be at least an hour.(cid:148) Bruce Dryer said (cid:147)I think that our lunch hours should be an hour, or maybe even more.(cid:148) A lot of kids like to go out with their pals to lunch and most going out will venture to Brunswick Square. The walk from the school alone takes about 10-12 minutes. Going both ways adds up to about 20-24 minutes which only leaves half an hour tops to eat and relax. The extra 10 or 15 minutes that the school could add to the lunch hours could come off of all those long breaks we have between classes. Take 2 minutes off each break and add that on to the lunch hour; that(cid:146)s 10 minutes right there. Rob Richard says, (cid:147)Our lunch hours are outrageously short(cid:148). Or our morn- ings could be extended by another 10 minutes and same with our afternoons and then we could have an extra 20 minutes to play with for lunch. Some teachers and students use their lunch hours to run important errands. A longer lunch would benefit just about everyone. The only thing that a longer lunch hour would do on the negative side is lengthen the school day a bit maybe. The time has come. Students are in a rush. University application deadlines are near- ing. Students are frantically filling out their transcript request forms in hopes that they will get accepted into their university of choice. Nervousness and anticipation set the mood. No worries though. The admission average standards of Ontario University students are back to usual, despite last year(cid:146)s double cohort graduating class that limited the amount of availability. For instance, Queen(cid:146)s University in Kingston, Ontario, held their minimum admission average for a BBA at 88% but it is expected to be 2% lower this year. The application process is easier than ever with online applications and UNB(cid:146)s (cid:145)on the spot admissions(cid:146). The online method allows the prospective student to view their applica- tion status at any time, to find out whether or not they have been accepted. UNB(cid:146)s (cid:145)on the spot admissions(cid:146) requires an interview and transcript. The student immediately finds out whether or not they were accepted. Fall 2004 deadlines range anywhere from February 20th, for Ontario schools, March across Canada, and May, for most specialized programs. The most popular deadline for graduating SJHS students is March 1st for UNBSJ/UNBF. The university experience is an exciting experience, opening a window of opportuni- ties. When SJHS student Brianna Starkey, was asked why she was looking forward to university, she stated, (cid:147) It(cid:146)s such a different atmosphere than high school, and you can concentrate on subjects that interest you.(cid:148) The twelve years are nearly at an end. It is time for change. Instant Admissions by: Nicole Nadeau On February fifth and sixth, the University of New Brunswick Saint John came to Saint John High School looking for qualified students to accept into the local university. Many grade twelve students anxiously awaited their appointment with the University. Within minutes they would know what their future held. Would they be accepted to the university? Would they have to apply somewhere else in hopes of getting accepted? Or would they have to try again in another year? This is what many students were forced to ask themselves the night before. While it is a very convenient and innovative way of applying to university, some students would just prefer to send an application in the mail and receive a letter back in a few weeks. (cid:147) It took away the whole experience of applying to university,(cid:148) said grade twelve student Erin Brewing. Most students, however, liked the idea of (cid:147)in- stant admissions(cid:148). Shawn Ekstrom said (cid:147)I thought it was reassuring because you knew right then and you didn(cid:146)t have to wait for a letter in the mail.(cid:148) With on site registration, they tell you in minutes whether or not you are accepted into the program of your choice and you receive an acceptance let- ter within days. On site registrations take away some of the stress of having to wait for a letter in the mail. (cid:147)I thought it was a good idea and it takes a lot of the stress away,(cid:148) said Sasha Lawlor. Students sometimes have to wait one or two months before they receive a letter, which makes it hard to plan ahead. The University of New Brunswick is one of only a few universities in Canada provid- ing this quick and easy alternative to traditional methods of applying to university. Why is everyone and their next-door neigh- bour is doing it? There are many reasons that regular yoga practice can benefit anyone. Stress relief is an enormous factor in the success of yoga, due to the fact that everyone at one time or another is stressed (as high school students, we know this all too well!). The health benefits that it can provide also encourage many to lead healthier life styles. There is also the physical aspect: the results one can see in one(cid:146)s body in just a few classes. Yoga stimulates both the mind, and the body. In this day and age, there are many things to be stressed over. Whether it be school, your job, or other activities, everyone is looking for a way to be rid of it. (cid:147)It stretches your muscles and it(cid:146)s a quiet activity, and good for you too(cid:148) says Catie Shelley who has done yoga several times. Yoga helps you to relax by having you concentrate solely on your breath. On the inhale, the stomach is filled with fresh oxygen; and on the exhale, toxins are forced out of the body. One of the famous sayings in the yoga scriptures is, (cid:147)Still body equals still mind(cid:148). The intent behind many yoga positions is to still the body, so the mind will follow. These positions would mainly be balancing poses, in which you are to remain very still. A favourite aspect of yoga to many is that it is completely non-competitive. No one does the poses perfectly; that(cid:146)s why it is called a yoga practice, not performance. Each time you do it, you will notice your own progress, and you do not have to worry about how you(cid:146)re doing compared to others. Not only does yoga benefit your inner mind, it also works to improve your inner body. Tattoos and piercings! This writer Graduates have a lot of expenses near the end of the school year, and some certainly does. female graduates feel as though one of those expenses is not necessary: white gradu- ation dresses. Although the dresses have always played a part in the graduation custom at SJHS, the cost is why some females feel that it is a problem. Ashley Henderson, a SJHS potential graduate, is one who feels that way; (cid:147)I do like that it makes our school unique but, I don(cid:146)t like the fact that I have to buy two dresses.(cid:148) Ashley feels that the school should help the female graduates find a white dress: (cid:147)The office should call the previous graduates and see if they want to sell their dresses. That way, the sizes and costs could be posted in the office.(cid:148) Brianna Starkey, another potential graduate, says that she is not concerned about the white dresses: (cid:147)I am borrowing my sister(cid:146)s dress from a few years ago. I like the white dresses because they look classy.(cid:148) Although some students feel that having to find a white dress is a pain, getting rid of them would be taking away a part of our school(cid:146)s tradition. (cid:147)It is a tradition that has played a part in graduation in Saint John High School since the 1800(cid:146)s(cid:148) says Mrs. Perry. (cid:147)The oldest Saint John High School white dress graduation photo is located in the computer wing. There are quite a few reasons as to why we keep the white dress tradition,(cid:148) says Mrs. Perry. (cid:147)One, is that keeping the gowns stored in the school and washing them every year is a hassle. Also, they are not exactly flattering.(cid:148) Hopefully the tradition will not be changed as it sets our school apart from others. It is believed that the tradition was carried over from Britain(cid:146)s private schools and that is why it has never been changed. On the Saint John High School website it reads, (cid:147) Our dress for graduation, ladies in white and gentlemen in suits, is as old as the school itself(cid:148). Ali has many future goals. Number one Some people who own dirtbikes do not race. They just ride casually for a hobby which is fine, but it is much safer to race. On a trail or sand pit there are many bikes riding around. There are many different classes: there is a 50cc class for younger kids 4 to 6, the next class up is 60cc (this class has sub classes for skill level) This class is from ages 6 to 9. The 80cc class is for 10 to 16 year olds and depending on the skill level they may buy a new dirtbike and advance to the beginner class that consists of 125cc and 250cc 2 stroke bikes. The beginner class is open to any age after 14. Once you place on the podium three times in the beginner class you get moved up to the junior class. This class is the first class in which you start racing for money. Once you have earned enough points you can move up to the intermediate class and then after you get enough points there you can go to the pro class which is very, very competitive. Some people make their living racing this class. Motocross is definitely an incredible sport which, unfortunately, is overlooked by a lot of people. This is the ultimate battle between the two greatest animated dysfunctional families. The Simpsons, being America(cid:146)s classic satirical comedy; and The Family Guy being the new-age slapstick comedy. While they both feature many celebrity (cid:147)appearances(cid:148), there are contrasts between the two. The Family Guy uses the technique of flash-back comedy, in which the charac- ters allude to a past or future experience ((cid:147)Remember that time when . . .(cid:148) or (cid:147)Wouldn(cid:146)t that be great if . . .(cid:148) ). It also uses shrewd sarcasm, mainly in the form of popular character (cid:147)Baby Stewie(cid:148). The Simpsons on the other hand, is more clever and satirical in its comedy techniques. Matt Groening (creator, director, etc.) has done many theme shows relating to several types of literature. The Simpsons has done its own versions of works such as: Hamlet, Adam and Eve, Moses, and Lord of the Flies. Who is the winner of this epic battle? (cid:147)You can(cid:146)t compare them(cid:148), says Brittany Auvinen a grade 12 student. (cid:147)They(cid:146)re each in a class of their own.(cid:148) The Simpsons have won the test of time; however, if The Family Guy continues to produce new episodes, they could give the well-loved classic a run for their animated money. The Simpsons have won the battle, but the war is far from over! Vitalis Saint John High School March 2004
