He holds a B.A. in law and literature, an M.A. in literature and modern and contem- poraryarthistoryandtheoryfromUniversidaddelosAndesinBogotá,and anM.A.inromancelanguagesandliteraturesfromHarvardUniversity.His researchfocusesonthedialoguebetweenmodernandcontemporaryLatin American visual arts and literatures. He has been an editor, curator, researcher, and teacher and currently is the C-MAP Fellow for Latin AmericaattheMuseumofModernArt,NewYork. Alejandro Escobar Mundaca received a B.F.A. from the University of Chile(2010)withamajoringuitarperformance.Hetwicewonfirstprizein the Festival Guitarras de América competition with his own compositions: Tres Aires Nortinos (2010) and Tres Pies de Cueca (2011). He has twice been awarded a scholarship from the Chilean government to complete a master’s in music at the University of Barcelona (2012) and to pursue a Ph.D. in music at the University of Sussex. His dissertation researches the interrelationships between Violeta Parra’s sound and her visual and written art forms. Juan Pablo González is chair of the Instituto de Música at the UniversidadAlbertoHurtadoinSantiagoandprofessorattheInstitutode HistoriaofthePontificiaUniversidadCatólicadeChile.HeearnedhisPh. D.inmusicologyfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles(UCLA).A ix x NOTESONCONTRIBUTORS pioneer in studies of twentieth-century popular music and its spheres of influenceinChile,hehascontributedwidelytothemusical,socio-historical, and socio-aesthetic fields. RosaTapia isaprofessorofSpanishandfilmstudiesatLawrenceUniver- sityand the directorofthe Latin American andSpanishFilm Festival. Her scholarship includes a book on the portrayal of Catalan nationalism in SpanishliteratureaswellasseveralarticlesandbookchaptersonPeninsular andLatinAmericanliteratureandfilm.Shewasalsotheeditorofavolume onLatinAmericancinema.Hercurrentresearchfocusesonissuesofaffect, ethics, and modes of cultural production and consumption for contempo- rary Ibero-American films that resist outmoded forms of categorization in spatial,economic,political,andculturalterms. Lorena Valdebenito Carrasco holds an M.A. in Hispanic music and a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Salamanca, Spain. She is a member of the faculty at the Institute of Music of the Universidad Alberto Hurtado. She is on the editorial board of Neuma magazine of the University of Talca, a member of the Center for Women’s Studies at the University of Salamanca, and a member of the Chilean Association of Studies in Popular Music. She has published various articles on Violeta Parra and participated in numerous conferences in Chile and abroad. Ericka Verba is director of Latin American Studies at California State University, Los Angeles. She earned her Ph.D. in Latin American history fromUCLA.SheiscurrentlywritingabiographyofVioletaParra,forwhich she received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Herpriorresearchfocusedontheintersectionofgenderandclasspoliticsin Chile in the early twentieth century. An accomplished musician, she was a founding member of the Los Angeles–based new song groups Sabiá and Desborde and is the current co-host of Canto Domingo3 (Avenue 50Studio). PatriciaVilches isprofessorofSpanishandItalianandscholarinresidence at Harlaxton College and professor of Spanish and Italian at Lawrence NOTESONCONTRIBUTORS xi University (retired). She studies Chile’s emergence as a nation and the conflictsthataroseamongthepoliticalpartiesandsocialclassesafterinde- pendence. Her research includes the cultural production of Violeta Parra and the Chilean Nueva Canción from a historical and socio-political per- spective.ThroughVioletaParra’smultidimensionalproduction,Vilcheshas interrogated the contestatory implications of her work for the Chilean nation, both during the artist’s lifetime and in the present day, as Violeta hasbeentransformedintoanationalicon.
