HERSCHAFT Appendix B: Presidents: American Society of Forensic Odontology 431 Foreword In 1980, the Forensic Odontology Workbook was published as a three-hole punched, loose leaf binder. Dr. Bob Siegel and I created this workbook in the spirit of sharing our collec- tive knowledge with the emerging forensic community. The book covered procedures in bitemark analysis, preservation of the chain of evidence, and courtroom procedures, as well as the identification of individuals through forensic odontology, age determination, mass disaster procedures, dental disaster teams, and dental photography and radiography procedures. The stimulus for writing the workbook came from our involvement in the crash of Pacific Southwest Airlines after a mid air collision with a private plane over San Diego in 1978. At the time, it was the worst air disaster in the United States. Of the 144 passengers and crew who perished, most were identified by dental comparison. Since those early years, I have had the pleasure of contributing to each subsequent manual edition. With each new edition, procedures and practices have been updated as forensic odontology has grown and developed. The second edition (renamed the Manual of Forensic Odontology) was published as a bound book in 1991. The third edition followed in 1997 and the fourth edition in 2006. Credit is due to the editors of those books, Drs. Marden Alder, David Averill, Gary Bell, Michael Bowers, Edward Herschaft, David Ord, Raymond Rawson, and Steven Smith. Much has transpired in the 32 years since that first edition. This new edition provides updates to the knowledge and procedures that were discussed in the preceding editions and is a compilation of the current state of the science. It is written by some of the most knowledgeable and experienced contributors in the field of odontology who bring years of practical experience to the project. As a past-president of the American Society of Forensic Odontology, it has been a pleasure to have been involved from the beginning. Many other past-presidents have now passed on and we all miss them. The opportunity to write this foreword for the Manual of Forensic Odontology, Fifth Edition, is not only a pleasure but an honor. I sincerely thank the editors for the opportunity to reflect and to summarize from whence we came! Norman D. (Skip) Sperber, DDS, D-ABFO vii
