ThisCD-ROM, Makersofthe20th Century, started lifeasa seriesin the SundayTimesMagazineofLondon.Itconsistedofathousandshortpieces,each onealifeinanutshell,bymorethan400writers.Wehavebuiltonthemagazine seriesand,usingthewholearmouryofmultimedia,wehavegivenanaccountof ourbusycenturythroughthelifestoriesofkeyindividuals.So,aswellaslearning thatNeilArmstrongwalkedonthe moon,youcanseehimdoitand readwhat theworldthoughtofhisincredible journey.Youcanwatch FredAstairedance, hear Billy Graham preach, or listen to Stephen Hawking explain what the cosmosmeanstohim. ButMakersofthe20thCenturyisnotanencyclopedia. Itisadigitalarchive containingthousandsofdiversedocuments.Andwehaveshapedtheserecords- contemporarynewspaperarticles, photographs, newsreels,togetherwithour introductionsandcaptions-into roundedpicturesofourMakers.Theyare like Picassoportraits,drawnfromseveraldifferentanglesatthesametime. ManyofthedocumentsintheCD-ROMwereoriginallypublishedlongago: theoldestnewspaperarticleisanaccountofthefirstwirelesssignaltospanthe AtlanticOcean,anditwasprintedinTheTimeson December 16, 1901.Thearti- clescovermorethanjustalongtimespan,theyalsotakeinawidevarietyofjour- nalisticgenres.TheyrangeinstylefromTheTimes'dryreportageofthe Russian revolution in 1917toTheSun'sjestingassessmentofMichaelJackson'seccentrici- tiesintheEighties. Oneofthestrengthsofusingcontemporarydocumentsistoshowhowmuch terminology,attitudesandopinionshavechanged in mattersofraceandsexual politics.Today, itisastonishing, forexample,todiscoverhowfreelytheword 'Negro'wasusedintheSixties-notjustbythepress,butthecivilrightschampions 2 Malcolm Xand Martin Luther King. Butwe have notaltered the newspaper articles, becausethisshiftispartofthestoryofourcentury, itisa brushstroke in thelargerportrait.Wedid notfeelwehadtherighttocensorthehistoryaccord- ingtotheattitudesofourownday. We recognisethathuman affairsare seldom a matterofheroicindividual accomplishment. HistorymakestheMakersasoftenastheMakersmakeHistory. Artistsareinfluenced byotherartists;scientistsbuild onthediscoveriesofearlier scientists; politiciansare born ofthetimes, andtheyneedtheirentourages,their armies,theirmassmovements. We havefoundvariouswaysofaddressingthishistoricaltruth. Onewasto choose Makerswhoaresymbolsoftheworld-shaking phenomena. SoWilfred Owen standsforthedreadfultrauma ofthefirstworldwar; Chico Mendes' life lets ustellthetragicstoryofthe rainforests, anothermanmadeorgyofdestruc- tion. Sometimeswe have letonelife representcollectiveachievementsorglobal events: CrickandWatsonforthediscoveryofDNA, Rosa Parksforsparkingthe blackcivil rightsmovement, HenryFordfortheageofthecar, Baekelandforthe proliferationofplastic,thatcharacteristictwentieth-centurymaterial. Intheeditorialprocess,wehavehadtoaskourselvesmanyimpossibleques- tions:whichinvention,forexample,hashadthegreatereffectonthewaywelive ourlivesdaybyday-theatom bomborthe photocopier?Onlyrarelydowars eruptand empirescollapse, butthebric-a-bracoftwentieth-centurytechnology- Scotchtape,Velcro, boardgames,zippers-these arewith useveryday. There are many subjects we have left untouched, many important peopleandeventswhosesignificanceisbarelytoucheduponormerelyimplied. ButnoneofthismeansthatMakersofthe20th Centurydrawsan incompleteor subjective picture ofthe pasthundredyears. Ifyou already haveversion 2.1.1 ofQuickTime forWindows installed, you can exitthe installerbyclicking Exit. Macintosh Makersofthe20th Centuryis readyto be used straightaway. Insertthe disc intoyourCD-ROM drive and you're readyto go! Ifyour Macintosh does not havethe latestversionsofthe Extensions required to run Makers ofthe20th Century, these can becopied from the CD-ROM. Double-click FilesforSystem Folder...,dragQuickTime,QuickTimePowerPlugandSoundMangerontoyour System Folderand restartyourMacintosh. 6 1 Getting Started Itis recommended thatyou have no otherapplications open when you run Makersofthe20th Century. Followingthestart-upsequence,youwillfindyour- selfatthe MainWorldsscreen, describedon page 12. Search isdescribed in detail onpage 22. On-line help isavailable from anywhere in Makersofthe 20th Century. When- everyou need help, clickthe Help button inthe Control Panel. Asyou movethe cursoraroundthe screenwiththemouse,youwillbegivenguidanceabouthow to proceed depending on the cursor's position. To switch offthe on-line help, clickanywhereonthescreen. Quit When you wanttoquit, clickthe Quitbutton in the Control Panel.Thiswilltake you tothe creditsandacknowledgmentsscreen. ClickQuitagainonthisscreen to exit, click Credits orAcknowledgments to viewthose screens, or, ifyou don't want to exit, click the Worlds button to go back into the CD-ROM. 8
