I i In early July when we began to work on the 1991 edition of Anchor, a special person took us aside. She sensed our growing frustrations and recog- nized the journey we had ahead of us. Her advice served as the backbone to our yearbook. Shetold us that if something is truly important to us, we should be persistent in our efforts to reach our goal. Her ability to empathize with people is valu- able to each and every one of us. We chose “The Gold Standard’’ as the theme for the Class of 1991’s yearbook. Mrs. Jean Sawyer taught us that only by striving for the best, do we have even a chance at success. Her genuine con- cern for Manchester High School ties us together as people, rather than as faculty and students. Today, we join together in appreciating Mrs. Jean Sawyer’s seventeen years of friendship and devo- tion to Manchester High School. We dedicate the 1991 Anchor\o Mrs. Jean Sawyer. 2 Principal's Message To The Class of 1991 We are entering an historical era in which we are being asked to do more with less. As consumers it will feel strange to reduce our appetites after an age of plenty that has blessed our nation since the end of World War II. However, it is time to pay the bills, and, fairly or unfairly your generation will be getting stuck with the check for our high living. In short, you will be asked to find the ways, if they can be found, to avoid reducing our quality of life. Perhaps technological innovations will help preserve our standard of living. In a rapidly changing world, brain-power has already replaced horsepower. We will all be relying on your creative powers and intellectual training to solve the environmental and energy problems we have created. Technical solutions are an American tradition. As Hank Morgan says in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court "I could make anything a body wanted, and if , there wasn't any quick, new fangled way to make a thing, I could invent one - and do it as easy as rolling off a log." If technology does not save the day, if you cannot think your way to solutions, if you fall short of the Herculean task before you, I hope you will remember what you have learned as a class: If everyone does his bit, and plays his role fully, a class that was small in number can have a large impact. You have made yourselves known, and you have left your mark - everyone got involved. To remind you to do your bit, I give you a fable. A triumphant feast was scheduled in a village. To insure adequate refreshment each villager agreed to pour one bottle of his very best wine into a great cask One villager reasoned, "If I filled my bottle with water the dilution would be so slight, no one would notice" But when the feast commenced and the great cask was tapped, water poured forth. Everyone had thought alike: My bit will not be missed. ^ 7 oO u J>c n&' Lo.
