Yetcompaniesrushtheproductioncycleinordertobefirsttomarket;machinesare called upon to operate in environments for which they were not designed; and enterprises lose business with computer software crashes. The resulting unhappy customers,expensive opportunitycosts, andpotentially unsafe operations haveled toacrisisinsoftwareproduction.Thus,thisbookistimelyinaddressingoneofthe most challenging problems in technology and one that is mostly hidden—devel- oping reliable flexible software that works “out of the box.” Indeed,softwaredevelopmenthasbeenstudiedfordecades.Projectmanagement techniqueshavebeenappliedtothesoftwaredevelopmentlifecycleandhaveledto recommendationsformethodssuchaswaterfall,agile,object-oriented,scrum,lean, iterative.
