Foreword As healthcare executives, we regularly face a range of issues in which ethics plays an important role, from determining what services are needed in the communities we serve, to always main- taining good financial stewardship and delivering the best care for patients, their families and your employees. The American College of Healthcare Executives has made an unwavering commitment to act in ways that merit the trust, confi- dence and respect of our members, our profession and the general public. We believe all healthcare leaders have a professional obliga- tion to create an ethical culture within the organizations they lead. To this end, we provide our members with several resources that serve as a touchstone in times and situations of uncertainty. The “Healthcare Management Ethics” column in Healthcare Executive, ACHE’s official magazine, has been a key component of our ethics resources since it became a part of the magazine in 1992. The editors of this new edition, William A. Nelson, PhD, HFACHE, and Paul B. Hofmann, DrPH, LFACHE, have regularly contributed to the column for more than 20 years and are recognized experts in healthcare management ethics. The columns they chose for this second volume of Managing Healthcare Ethically focus on issues that affect policies and management within healthcare organizations. An organization’s ability to achieve its full potential as an ethically aligned entity depends on the motivation, skills and practices of each ix Copying and distribution of this PDF is prohibited without written permission.
