Abernathy Too often Americans blame the weakened U.S. economy on inflation, the effects of government regulation and tax policy, or price escalation by OPEC. Arguing that responsibility lies not only with these general economic forces but also with American managers' failure to keep their companies technologically competitive, the authors offer their own prescriptions for nursing American business back to health. 1981 25 The New Industrial Competition William J. Abernathy, Kim B. Clark, And Alan M. Kantrow U.S. manufacturers have long felt pressure from their European and Japanese competitors. Using the automobile manufacturing industry as a case example, the authors show how Japanese carmakers' success secretsnamely, their superior manufacturing plantshave changed the rules of the game. The Page vi challenge for U.S. companies in endangered industries is to recognize the new worldwide industry rules, adjust to them, and learn to manage change. 1982 51 Managing As If Tomorrow Mattered Robert H. Hayes And David A. Garvin Attempting to apply greater rationality to investment decisions, American managers have turned increasingly to sophisticated analytic techniques for evaluating proposed investments. The authors assert, however, that such actions often lead to a serious underinvestment in the capital stock (production capacity, technology, and worker skills) on which their companies rest. Managers need to be wary of certain techniques that may be profoundly biased against investment. 1983 67 Quality on the Line David A. Garvin Drawing on his multiyear study of production operations at all but one of the manufacturers of room air conditioners in the United States and Japan, the author documents the immense variation in levels of quality performance along the spectrum of competitors. His analysis reveals that superior performance levels come not from cultural advantage and national traits but from the systematic implementation of sound management practices. 1984 89 Wrestling with Jellyfish Richard J. Boyle
