We say to you: Do not relent in your efforts. “We desire to bequeath two things to our children. The first one is roots; the other one is wings.” —Sudanese proverb Foreword The book series Management and Leadership for a Sustainable Africa edited by Kemi Ogunyemi, Oreva Atanya and Vanessa Burgal adds its weight to the sustained efforts to transform Africa from a discourse of scarcity, cynicism, crisis, inequality and unemployment to an economic powerhouse through well-managed quality education. This follows pronounced calls from policymakers, quality assurance agencies and all stakeholders for educational institutions to be accountable for providing home-grown innovations that provide sustainable solutions to “Africa’s challenges.” The summation of these solutions can be presented as self- reliance, industrialisation (production of goods and services), modernisa- tionandresponsibleleadershipandmanagement.Morethanever before, the role of education in the achievement of inclusive socio-economic development has gained strategic national importance. Hence, it is not surprising that this book, which is the third volume in the series, focuses on harnessing education as a strategic tool for achieving sustainable development. This book is based on philosophical, conceptual, empirical, compara- tive and case study approaches to provide evidence on how the concept of education for sustainable development can transform nations. Three key thematic perspectives to promoting sustainability through education are presented in the nine chapters that constitute this third volume of thebook:awarenessbuilding;curriculum;andpractitioner/institutionally based approaches. These approaches focus on ways in which education vii viii FOREWORD can be used in formal and informal settings to address the socio- economic, environmental and technological sustainability drivers. The chapters in the book also address key leadership and management issues including policy, awareness, effective communication, language and the need to include people from the grassroots in the sustainability drive. The edited book includes contributions from a unique team of emerging and established educationists and practitioners in varying disci- plines, interests and institutions across Africa both private and public. These authors used their knowledge, expertise, exposure and “lived” experiences to explore ways in which education can empower Africans to achieve sustainable socio-economic development. Although the book is set in Africa, the authors clearly bring out the global nature of sustainability, using universal theoretical concepts, practical examples and comparative analogies, thus making the book a must-read for all. This book exemplifies the continent’s aspirations to use African talent and heritage to influence global theories and practice.
