Irrespective of our des- ignation, and knowingly or unknowingly, every day at work we play the role of a colleague, teacher, mentor, supervisor, manager, or a leader while dealing with the clients. Formal training in essential management and leadership skills is therefore an important issue for both, the employee and the employer. Unfortunately, it is often ignored or not provided enough attention in many organisations, especially those providing health care services. Some of the most experienced authors from around the world have come to- gether to provide an understanding of management and leadership skills that are essential for staff in a health care organisation, in a simple and clear fashion in this book. I am grateful to them for their valuable contributions, the quality of which reflects their expertise in various aspects of management as clinicians, supervisors, and managers. Without their help it would have been impossible to complete a book such as this in a remarkably short time. The topics covered in this book range from preparing for an interview, the art of negotiation and handling difficult behaviour, to clinical leadership, evidence based management, and managing grief and its consequences at the workplace. I hope that with its simple and practical approach this book will be useful for all clinical and non-clinical staff working in a health care organisation irrespective of their faculty, position, and stage in career in developing the essential management and leader- ship skills. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Springer, their publishing editor Thijs van Vlijmen, and publishing assistant Sara Germans-Huisman for their encouragement and support in getting this unique book published. We hope that it will help readers in becoming successful consultants, managers, supervisors, and leaders at workplace. v Contents 1 Succeeding in Your Consultant Interview................................................ 1 Matt Green 2 Clinical Leadership and Engagement: No Longer an Optional Extra ...................................................................................... 19 John Clark 3 T he Art of Negotiation, Handling Difficult Behaviour, and Facing the Media ................................................................................ 33 Lucky Jain, Sanjay Patole and Sarah Sloan 4 Handling Complaints, Meetings, and Presentations ............................... 45 Haribalakrishna Balasubramanian and Sanjay Patole 5 Performance Appraisal and Assessment .................................................. 63 Paul Craven 6 Quality Improvement ................................................................................ 75 Brendan Paul Murphy 7 Risk Management ...................................................................................... 91 Bronwyn Shumack 8 Root Cause Analysis ................................................................................... 105 Aarti Raghavan 9 Occupational Health and Safety ............................................................... 123 Paul Rothmore and Rose Boucaut 10 Coping with Stress at Work ...................................................................... 137 Christopher Griffin vii viii Contents 11 The Nature of Conflict in Health-Care ................................................... 149 Catherine Campbell and Corinne Reid 12 Evidence Based Management ................................................................. 167 Ravi Madhavan and Ajay Niranjan 13 Clinical Handovers................................................................................... 181 Sachin Amin 14 The Educational Role of Senior Hospital Staff ..................................... 197 Fiona Lake 15 Mentoring ................................................................................................. 213 Deepika Wagh and Sanjay Patole 16 E xpert or Impostor—Understanding the Role of the Expert Witness ............................................................................... 229 Denise Bowen 17 How to Dress at Work .............................................................................. 241 Rajkishore Nayak, Rajiv Padhye and Lijing Wang 18 M anaging Ethically Complex Issues in Critically Ill Patients—A Neonatal Perspective .......................................................... 257 Paul Byrne and Brendan Leier 19 Communicating Bad News in the Health Care Organization .............. 269 Olachi J.
