This book is not purely historical, forwe only relate here the historical events that have had a direct effect on Makkah and its development, sanctityandreligiousstatus. The book begins with a discussion ofthe sacred nature ofMakkahAl- Mukarramah, theboundaries oftheHaram (Sanctuary) andits sanctity. Thenitdiscussesthe superiorityofMakkahandnarratesAhadith to that effect. Then it mentions the names ofMakkah and the significance of thesenames. This book also speaks of Ibrahim (Abraham) and il (Ishmael) (peacebeuponthem)andtheirconnectiontoMakkahanditssanctityand development. For Makkah derives its sanctity and high status from the presence of the Ka‘bah in the city. An entire section of the book is devoted to the Ka‘bah and discusses its origins and construction, the connectionofHajrah(Hagar) andIsma‘il32)to it,whathashappenedto it as it had been destroyed and rebuilt throughout the ages, and who its custodians have been. The book also discusses the holy places that are connectedtoit, suchastheMaqam(theStationofIbrahim), Al-Hajar AI- Aswad(theBlackStone),Al-HijrandAl-Multazam. Naturally enough, the book devotes a considerable amount ofattention tothewellofZamzam,describingthehistoryofitsorigins,howitwas re- dug, its superiority, how its water is used to treat sickness, andreal-life examplesofthat.
