Too often I have witnessed students’ noble ambitions – be it in research, leadership or elsewhere – squandered by a lack of experience, insight or guidance. This represents a lose–lose situation: students are deprived of an opportunity to build their skills or track record, often to the detriment of their future enthusiasm and engagement, and medicine or society at large is deprived of the weird and perhaps wonderful contribution they might have otherwise (one day) made. While completing medical school and becoming a safe and competent doctor is the number one goal – I hope this book will aid readers to make the most of this time and, with any luck, their careers thereafter. Ashton Barnett-Vanes v http://taylorandfrancis.com Acknowledgements I thank the many contributors who offered their time and experience to make this book a reality, including those who provided helpful review of other chapters: Dr Joanna Koster, my commissioning editor at Taylor & Francis, for her support from the beginning of this book, and Julia Molloy, Adel Rosario and Kyle Meyer for their tireless coor- dination and administration. I acknowledge Kate Pool and her team at the Society of Authors for their advice and guidance. My thanks go to students and colleagues who wittingly or otherwise gave me inspira- tion for this project and the many teachers and leaders who have lent their support over the years. Finally, I owe a debt of gratitude to friends and family, whose unwavering patience and generosity allowed me to take this book to completion. This book is dedicated to the memory of Jolyon Jones.
