I quickly completed all the classroom work and soon was out on the floor doing hair. That’s where I met Marc London. Marc was a very forward-thinking man and had been working with chemists to create his own line of cosmetics. He taught me everything he knew about makeup, and soon I was helping sell his cosmetics. I learned so much from Marc, and we remained close friends until his death in early 2000. Marc’s techniques are the base for all my cosmetic blends and recipes in this book. (What did Marc use for his powdered eye shadows? Micas!) With my background in art and his teaching, I’ve been able to create blends and color grinds for all types of mineral makeup products, and now I’m pleased to share that knowledge with you. In the years since I wrote my last book, many new and exciting ingredients have become available—and of course, I had to try them! One good thing leads to another good thing, and the result is the book you now hold in your hands. Recently, U.S. lawmakers have been updating laws that affect the cosmetic industries to bring the U.S. laws in line with the laws in Europe and the rest of the world. Many ingredients now have to be labeled differently, and some are no longer permitted. The recipes in this book all fall within the globalization laws, enabling you to sell your products all over the world. When you’re ordering supplies, opt for “globally approved” products when possible, even if you don’t plan on selling your products beyond your friends and family. Making your own beauty products will mean more money in your pocket over the coming years, and that’s an important point. However, knowing exactly what ingredients are used and how they work is far more important than the money you’ll save. When using commercial products, you could be using ingredients you don’t even know are there. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration only requires that ingredients used in quantities greater than 1 percent be listed on a product’s label. A commercial product may claim to have shea butter, for example, but you might not find it listed on the label because the manufacturer used less than 1 percent in the formulation. When making your own cosmetics, however, you know exactly what ingredients and how much of each are used. Ch00_NB_FM.indd 8 5/23/13 4:40 PM
