A 2volt accumulator can be Used in place of the No. 6 cell and any tapped 'B” battery in place of the Salt battery. AERIAL AND EARTH.—It is essential that 4 good aerial and earth are used—remember you are only using one valve and low battery voltage. Give your.set a fair chance by using 2 good aerial, LICENSE.—It is necessary to obtain a license for this radio set just the same ax you woud tor any other set. However, st you have already got a set It ls not necessary to. get an add ‘onal Hieense. "Briety, the rule ts "One license for each tamily in each house. PHONES OR SPEAKER.—A common question is: “Can 1 use a speaker with my "Hikers ‘One'2""” Yes, provided you can obtain enough volume to operate it. This sot ie designed for use with headphones, and we cannot guarantee speaker reception. Many usere near powerful broadcast stations and in favourable localities for reception obtain speaker volume, but this should be regarded more as the except than the rule. Extra volume to work a speaker stations can he obtained by adding an 4s decerined on this page. Some may like te build both the “Hiker's” and its Amplifier together. A really portable “Hikers One.” | Completely self-contained—set, valve, batteries, aerial and "phones all in a small lunch case. This portable set will give you good head- phone reception from your main local stations. | Using the famous “Hikers One” cirenit in con- | junction with the self-contained loop aerial, this is the answer for a low-powered portable, | Even in a steelframed building in Wellington the “Hikers Lunch Bag One” continued to bring im the locals at good ‘phone strength. The coil is also the frame aerial, and is wound around the outside of the wood chas- sis on which the components are mounted. We must first build the chassis frame, which can be made from three-ply or thin box wood. ‘Measurements are given in the illustration. ‘The frame should be joined together by means of screws. When completed give it about three | coats of varnish or shellac, This is very im- portant, as the moisture in the air may affect the wood and cause loss in the coils. ‘The coils are now wonnd around the out- side of the chassis. The grid coil is spac wound (to cover 14 inches). The tickler coil is close wound and spaced 3-16in. from the grid coil. Both windings must be wound in the same direction. The ends of the coils can be fixed by the usual method of drilling two small holes and passing the wire through, Leave plenty of wire so that you will be able to connect to the respective components. After winding the coils, slip wooden matches under the wires so as to raise the windings from | the wood. Three matehes on each side and two on each end, spaced evenly, will do nicely. The valve socket and clips for holding the bat- teries should now be fixed to the inside of the chassis frame. You can make the battery clips from any old metal sheet, as their sole purpose is to keep the batteries from slipping about. Now wire up the components in accordance with the eireuit diagram. | When finished, check over all connections carefully. OPERATION. Advance yolume control to a point just before oscillation, and then tune the condenser until a station is heard. Then adjust volume control for best results. Now rotate the whole set until volume is at loudest point. ‘This op- eration is necessary as most portable sets have a definite directional tendeney. Christehureh, “I have built the All-Wave Double Forty ine, and have logged over 40 amateurs all over New Zealand on 80 metre band, It is an excellent set.""—L.N. Hostel, Wanganui, 29/11/40. Dear Sir,—Last week-end I went home to Marton, where T live. I built the All Wave Duplex Single during my stay at home, and I am really thrilled with such a small set's performance. I bought a choke and two condensers from you for it, and all are working well. The cirenit was very simple indeed and took no time at all to wire the set. T used a plug-in Hikers’ One coil and an eliminator for power supply. It is very easy to tune in, and on the earphones I received dozens of different stations. On a small speaker I was able to listen’ to all the main New Zealand stations very clearly. During the Christmas holidays I am going to add a 30 and 33 valve amplifier to it and wind a set of short-wave coils, It is a really wonderful set for its size. The packet of resistors I bought from you for 3/6 have all proved to be very good qualitiy. Sending you another order next week, Yours faithfully, M.S.
