INTRODUCTION ThegenusMacromidiawas erected by Martinin 1907,with M.rapida as the type species. To date, thegenus includes thirteenspecies andthree subspecies, whichare distributedover India, SoutheastAsia, theRyukyu archipelago ofJa- panand China(DAVIES & TOBIN, 1985; ASAHINA, 1964, 1978; FRASER, 1936;ISHIDAetal., 1991;LIEFTINCK, 1935,1971;WILSON,1996;ZHOU & WEI, 1979;TSUDA,2000). Fourspecies, namely M. rapida Matin, 1907(Hong Kong, Guangdong), M.kelloggi Asahina, 1978(Fujian), M. hangzhouensis Zhou &Wei, 1979(Zhejiang) andM. ellenaeWilson 1996(Hong Kong)havebeenre- cordedfromChina.Thispaperdescribesanewspecies ofthegenus. 158 Y.-H.Jiang,Z.-H.Li& W.-Y.Yu MACROMIDIA SHIEHAE SP. Etymology. - Thenewspeciesisnamed afterMrsShwu-Feng Shieh,wifeoftheTaiwan- eseentomologistProfessorChung-ChichKuan. MALE, — Head. — Face withshortblack hairs.Labium:medianandlateral lobes yellow, labrumblack with yellow margins at middle; anteclypeus yellow, postclypeus black withyellowanteriormargins,others allblack, fronswithtwo prominences. Vertex with horizontal ridge. Antennaeblack. Frons and vertex rough-surfaced, withgreenmetallicreflection; occiput blackwithbrownhairs. Thorax. — Prothorax. — Anteriormarginofanteriorlobeand hindmar- gin ofposterior lobeofprothoraxwithyellow stripes, medianlobewithfourfine yellow streaks.Lateralsynthorax illustratedinFigure 1,synthoraxblackwithme- tallicreflectionmarkedwith five yellow stripes on each side. Dorsum covered with thickpale brownhairs;ayel- lowantehumeralstripeoccu- pies half of the mesepister- num; it turns to brown at its upper end. Between the mesepimeronandmetepister- numthree yellow stripes are found, covering thespiracle. Metapimeron with yellow marking, metapostepimeron entirely yellow. Legs black, ventralside of frontlegs trochanterandfe- murmarkedwithyellow, ven- trumofmesocoxaandmeta- coxawith yellow spots, hind legs and middle legs with a pale brownkeel. Acontinuous yellow streakfrom ItoVI,segmentVIIwithahintofanextremely fineyellowdorsalstripe over its fronthalf;VIII, IXandXblack; segmentIwithfineyellow streakonbothsides, marks of segmentII bigger thanothersin sideview. Auricle bright yellowwith yellow marks belowand on genital lobe.Tergite of abdomen3-4 fringed with fineyellow streaks atmargin. DorsumofsegmentXstrongly carinated.Second- ary genitaliaandcaudalappendages illustratedinFigures2-4.Superior analap- pendages yellow, withdark brownspotonbase, extremetipblack, withabunch ofblackhairs,otherhairsyellow. FEMALE. — Unknown. remarks. - The new species is closely related to M. ellenae Wilson, 1996 andM. hangzhouensis Zhou& Wei, 1979,butis differentiatedfrom bothby: (1) postclypeus with yellow onanteriormargins; (2) medianlobeofprothoraxwith fourfineyellowstreaks; (3)thoraxwithfiveyellow stripes; (4) nodalindexoffore and hindwings less lower than in the otherfour Macromidiaspecies described fromChina.
