Lord TedricTedric looked up at the screens and finally saw the
Wykzl ship. But something was wrong! Even as
Tedric watched, the ship seemed to be getting
smaller, drawing gradually away.
‘It’s pulling away,’ Nolan said.
•No,’ said SL, from his controls. ‘It’s being
pulled away.’ ,
‘Pulled?*
The robot nodded. ‘By 2X49.’
‘This soon?’ asked Tedric, watching the enemy
ship closely.
‘If we were a thousand kilometres closer, it would
be pulling us, too.’
Tedric watched the viewscreen with a feeling of
excitement and awe. Somewhere in that picture, he
knew, lay the invisible star, 2X49, a black hole, an
object so massive and so shrunken that not even
light could escape its surface. And the Wykzl ship
was being drawn downward, down into that...

Tedric now realised whose voice this was ... it
came as no great surprise. What he was hearing
was the disembodied voice of a member of the
darker forces - of an adversary.
Tedric felt his lips twist into a smile. In the years
he had spent in this universe in conflict with these
mysterious creatures, he had never been so close to
one before.
‘Tedric is no more powerful than any human
being. He’s physically strong, a fine warrior, I grant
you that, but only a barbarian, a savage even
among the denizens of the Empire. To come here as
Tedric did can only be considered an act of foolishness.
The difference between bravery and stupidity
is minute. Tedric will not leave alive.’
