The grouping consists of three critical documents. The first is an "ausweis", or official identification issued and signed by HANS JURGEN STUMPFF (1889–1968), German general and one of the signatories to Germany's unconditional surrender, then commander of Luftflotte Reich. In that capacity, Stumpff signs a 1p. oblong 8vo. document emanating from "Headquarters" on May 5, 1945 and advising: "By order of the Armed Forces High Command, Generalmajor Uebe, by proxy of Air Fleet Command Reich, is authorized to conduct surrender negotiations for the Luftwaffe units in the Northern Command Area ...". The second document, 6pp. legal folio in two parts, contains the actual orders to be followed by Luftflotte Reich set forth in the surrender terms agreed to the previous day at Luneberg Heath. The typed document, bearing two holograph additions, was negotiated between R.A.F. Air Vice Marshal VICTOR GROOM and German Generalmajor KLAUS UEBE. The terms dictate the complete disarming and grounding of every flying vehicle, reading in part: "...All German and German controlled aircraft...will be grounded immediately...Their guns will be unloaded and bombs removed...one of the essential aeo-foil surfaces e.g. rudder or elevators, will be removed...The propeller will be removed...[also] gun sights, bomb sights, bomb racks, gun turrets and wireless...[and] segregated from aircraft...All flying bombs [V-1 and V-2] will be immobilised...anti-aircraft guns...will be neutralised immediately...Under no circumstances will guns or equipment be damaged...All small arms including pistols, rifles and carbines, machine guns and knives will be withdrawn...fuses will be detached...all balloons will be hauled down and deflated...all marine craft..will remain in harbor...immediate and total disarmament of all Air Forces..." The document also calls for disclosure within 48 hours of much critical information, including location and strength of all forces; types, numbers and locations of aircraft; details on flak defenses, airfields, landing grounds, sea plane bases, etc., rations on hand, radio and radar capabilities; fuel stocks; all rocket locations, as well as research sites, and so on. The third and final document, 1p. 4to., is the actual agreement to the terms signed at RAF 2nd Tactical Air Force Headquarters, May 5, 1945. Headed: "ORDERS TO THE GERMAN AIR FORCE COMMANDER" and signed by Air Vice Marshal VICTOR GROOM (1898-1990), it reads: "The following Orders are issued on behalf of the Supreme Allied Commander by the Air Officer Commanding in Chief, Second Tactical Air Force, Royal Air Force, to the Commander of the German Air Force in those territories which are included in the unconditional surrender of the German Forces in the Northern Zone". Beneath, Generalmajor KLAUS UEBE (1900-19068), a Knights Cross recipient acting on the aforementioned authority of Gen. Hans Jurgen Stumpff, writes in holograph: "With full awareness of the proceedings. Uebe Generalmajor 5.5.45.". Groom was head of the RAF Air Staff planning for Operation Overlord. As part of his duties there, he accompanied Air Chief Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory to North Africa to study operations and on 8 September 1943 he was promoted to acting air vice marshal. On 8 September 1944 he was promoted to air commodore while acting as air vice marshal. With Uebe's acceptance of these orders, a full five days before the formal German surrender, the Luftwaffe in north-west Germany, Holland, Denmark, Heligoland and outlying islands was taken completely out of action, permanently, with the stroke of a pen. That same day, RAF fighter squadrons of No. 83 Group escorted several German aircraft to a British air base. One aircraft, refusing to comply, was "splashed" into the North Sea. This historic set of war-ending documents is in overall fine condition. 2: ADOLF HITLER USD 5,000 - 6,000 ADOLF HITLER(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. A PRESENTATION PHOTO TO HANS LAMMERS Superb, oversized inscribed signed photograph presented to DR. HANS LAMMERS, 9 1/2" x 9 1/2" sepia, a candid image of Hitler seated at his desk and looking to his right as Martin Bormann, Wilhelm Frick, Lammers, and Wilhelm Stuckart present reports to him. At bottom, Hitler boldly inscribed the photo: "My colleague on his 60th birthday, Reichsminister Dr. Lammers, in remembrance of the great times we have experienced together Adolf Hitler". Mounting strips at top and bottom, else fine condition. The verso bears pencil notes and translation from noted Swiss autograph expert Renato Saggiori, through whom the piece once passed. From Lammers' estate. SOLD WITH: a gilt-edged 7 1/2" x 5" formal invitation from Hitler to Lammers to attend a breakfast in honor of the Japanese Foreign Minister; and an Adolf Hitler D.S. (lithographed signature), 1p. sm. folio, Berlin, Feb. 1, 1938 giving Lammers permission to accept a high Yugoslavian award. HANS LAMMERS (1879–1962) was a German jurist and prominent Nazi politician. From 1933 until 1945 he served as Chief of the Reich Chancellery under Hitler and also served as a member of the Council of Ministers for the Defense of the Reich. In this position, he was able to review all pertinent documents regarding national security and domestic policy even before they were forwarded to Hitler. Historian Martin Kitchen explains that due to the centralization of power accorded to the Reich Chancellory and therefore to its head, Lammers became "one of the most important men in Nazi Germany." He was tried in the Ministries Trial, one of the subsequent Nuremberg trials, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Three pieces. 3: ADOLF HITLER USD 3,000 - 5,000 ADOLF HITLER(1889 - 1945) Fuhrer of Germany and Nazi Party leader, Hitler's bloody rise to power, his military seizure of most of Europe and North Africa and his genocidal racial policies culminated in suicide in his Berlin bunker as Russian troops approached. Excellent, early S.P., 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" b/w by his official photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann, shows Hitler in a defiant three-quarter length pose, his hand on his hip, attired in a Brownshirt uniform. Boldly signed in black ink at lower-right and in fine condition. Bid Live Online at LiveAuctioneers.com Page 1 Spring Auction 2018 Part I 4: WINSTON S. CHURCHILL USD 2,000 - 3,000 WINSTON S. CHURCHILL(1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister who led England through the Blitz and orchestrated the British liberation of occupied Europe and Germany. Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. CHURCHILL'S PRE-WAR THOUGHTS ON HITLER Scarce, probable war-date signed book, Churchill’s “Great Contemporaries†(London: MacMillan & Co.), 1943. 288pp. 8vo. in blue cloth with gold title on spine with fine dust wrapper. An early edition of Churchill’s classic collection of essays, signed and inscribed on the front flyleaf: “To F. May from Winston S. Churchill 1945â€. The subjects of Churchill’s essays include Kaiser Wilhelm II, Paul von Hindenburg, Lawrence of Arabia, Marshal Foch, King George Vi, and many others, including most notably: “Hitler and His Choice, 1935â€. In this particular essay, written in 1935, Churchill speculates: “We cannot tell whether Hitler will be the man who will once again let loose upon the world another war...or whether he will go down in history as the man who restored honour and peace of mind to the great Germanic nation...It is on this mystery of the future that history will pronounce...â€. In custom clamshell box, ex: Bauman Rare Books. 5: GEORGE S. PATTON USD 2,500 - 3,500 GEORGE S. PATTON(1885 - 1945) "Old Blood and Guts" was one of the finest tank commanders in history, rolling his forces through Tunesia, Sicily, France and Germany until halted at the Rhine. PATTON SIGNS AND ANNOTATES HIS BOOK ON THE SOVIET ARMY A most insightful signed book from Patton's pre-war library: "Red Russia Arms" by John Baker White (London: Burrup, Mathieson & Co.), 1932. First edition, 144pp. 8vo. in carmine cloth with gilt title on spine. As was his custom in the Thirties, Patton has signed his name across the front cover of the book, and has written "Patton R" upon the spine as well. "G.S.P. Jr." appears in thick pencil above Patton's signature on the cover, although this may be in another hand. The book is extensively annotated in Patton's hand in pencil throughout. He is particularly fond of placing one or two vertical lines beside passages of particular interest oF importance to him. It is clear throughout that Patton is concerned with Russian military strength, as he totals various numbers of men in arms in machine gun units, cavalry, etc. and examines dozens of aspects of Russian military strength. Some of the Russian tanks are listed - Patton comments: "None of these are very much good". He further notes: "Armies should be measured less by size and more by the ability of the officers. By this standard Russia is not too bad...A revolt of this class [armed OGPU units] of troops may possibly destroy the present gov't...[Russian officers have] Low mentality...poor officers...". Patton notes "Yes" in agreeing that a war in the near future could see then end of the Soviet Union, and interestingly indicates that his wife Beatrice was a friend of reporter John Reed. One bit of humor: where the text indicates that younger Soviet women now desire to carry weapons and learn the science of war, he notes: "We may have a pleasant time in the next war". Many "hash marks" and other annotations throughout. Overall very good condition. In custom clamshell box. The book is an analysis of the "Bolshevik" threat to world peace and disarmament which the author perceived in Soviet Russia in the early 1930s. Author John Baker White (1902-1988) started his career as a political activist, later becoming a director of a private organization dedicated to fighting left-wing subversion. He was an amateur spy in Nazi Germany before becoming a propaganda agent during World War II. In 1945, he was elected a Conservative policitian. He was also a journalist and author and his work reveals a colorful, possibly eccentric, personality...much like his admirer, General Patton. 6: DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER USD 2,000 - 3,000 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. IKE FRETS ABOUT PATTON'S MEDICAL CONDITION Outstanding personal content T.L.S. “Ike†with holograph postscript initialed “Dâ€, 1p. 8vo. on War Department, Chief of Staff letterhead, Washington, Dec. 12, 1945. Eisenhower directs his letter to Gen. Geoffrey Keyes, a close friend and subordinate of Gen. George S. Patton woh was integral in the invasion of Sicily where he commanded the portion of the Seventh Army composed of the 2nd Armored Division, the 3rd Infantry Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. Here, at war’s end, Ike accepts congratulations for his new position...and adds an important postscript. In part: “...Your thoughtful message of congratulations on behalf of the officers and men of the Seventh Army is deeply appreciated...The accomplishments of the Seventh Army are a source of pride to all of us. I know under your command it shall continue to be an outstanding organization...†In his own hand, Ike adds a thoughtful postscript: “...I’m fearfully upset about George [Patton] – how I hope and pray he will make the grade! Dâ€. Folds, else fine. With a “Headquarters Seventh Army†envelope upon which is typed a note (probably by Keyes) stating that the letter had been delivered by a courier who stated that the original transmittal envelope, presumably reading “Chief of Staffâ€, could not be kept by Keyes. Nine days after Eisenhower wrote this letter, Patton would die from injuries sustained in a car crash on December 8th. His friend Keyes would be at his side. 7: DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER USD 1,500 - 2,000 DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. Wonderful D.S., 1p. 8vo., an exact facsimile of his famous D-Day Order of the Day distributed to American soldiers en route to Normandy on June 6, 1944, boldly signed in full by Eisenhower at bottom. Fine condition. This signed facsimile was removed from no. 594 of the 1,426 signed first edition copies of Eisenhower’s memoirs, “Crusade in Europeâ€, published in 1948. The signed order remains attached to the limitation page which was removed from a badly water-damaged copy of the book. Fine condition. KUHLTHE RECIPIENT OF PATTON'S FAMOUS "SLAP" RECOUNTS THE EVENT AND HIS FEELINGS ABOUT THE GENERAL CHARLES H. KUHL (1915-1971) American Army private of the 26th Infantry Regiment. Initially diagnosed with "exhaustion,", Kuhl was transferred from an aid station to the Army's 15th Evacuation Hospital near Nicosia, Sicily for further evaluation. On a tour of that hospital on August 3, 1943, Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. encountered Kuhl, who was sitting slouched on a stool midway through a tent ward filled with wounded soldiers. When Patton asked Kuhl where he was hurt, Kuhl shrugged and replied that he was “nervous†rather than wounded, adding "I guess I can't take it." Patton slapped Kuhl across the chin with his gloves, then grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to the tent entrance, shoving him out of the tent with a final kick to Kuhl's backside. Yelling "Don't admit this son-of-a-bitch," Patton demanded that Kuhl be sent back to the front at once, adding "You hear me, you gutless bastard? You're going back to the front." Following the incident, Kuhl was found to have both chronic dysentery and malaria. When Eisenhower learned of the matter, he ordered Patton to make amends, after which Patton formally apologized to the soldier "and to all those present at the time." However, enormous stateside press coverage tarnished Patton’s image for years to come. Amazing postwar A.L.S. by CHARLES H. KUHL with holograph transmittal envelope which is also signed in the return address, 4pp. 8vo., [South Bend, In.], Aug. 4, 1970. Kuhl describes the infamous Patton “slapping†incident and his opinion of the general. In part: “...It was in Aug. of 1943. It was in Sicily...I think it was in the 8nd Field Hosp. Tent. I thought I had lost my nerves and was just shot. I was sitting in the tent when it happened. Waiting to be admitted. When Gen. Patton and his guard walked in. I don’t remember for sure but I would say there were about 25 or 30 soldiers in there. After the incident I was admitted and that is when they found out I had Malaria. I was flown back to Africa to recuperate. Then I was brought back to Palermo, Sicily for the Gen. to apologize...He was a very rough and tough Gen. I will say he got what he went after no matter what. Sometimes I think they need some one like him in Viet Nam. Personally I don’t like him as a man but still don’t have any hard feelings against him. I hope this answers most of what you wanted to know...†Fine condition. Following the war, Kuhl retired to a relatively peaceful life as a janitor in Indiana. Also included are copies of correspondence between Eisenhower and Patton concerning the incident, with a cover letter from the Eisenhower Library. 9: ERNST ROHM USD 2,000 - 3,000 ERNST ROHM(1887 - 1934) Nazi Brownshirt who organized, trained and headed the SA, a friend of Hitler who was at his side in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, later set-up and executed by Hitler following their disagreement on the use of the two million-strong SA. ROHM TO HIS LOVER: "...YOU NAUGHTY PIG BOY!..." Especially rare A.L.S. with outrageous gay content on Rohm's "Hauptman A.D." letter head with holograph transmittal envelope, 2pp. 4to., Munich, Mar. 3, 1926 to "Franz Kugler[?]". In part: "...Dirty brat, I have just received your dear letter and respond immediately. You are right, it is a scandal that I have addressed you in a formal manner and it will not happen again. You naughty pig-boy, write 'my dear Röhm', just as if we already laid in bed together, which is regrettably not the case. We’ll leave it at that. I order that this salutation will be used in the future! Your letter was a lot cheekier than that from Brey; it seems that being without your influence has a civilizing effect for Brey. What matters to you both except thirst seems to be your magical sex drive. To this end I congratulate you, because I have it too, all the more that it is currently my only 'positive' activity. So Dolf has been hanging around in Berlin and in the Friedrichstrasse, if only he was not on the wrong side of the road. Got caught. Bavarians are particularly popular in Berlin – namely in the Friedrichstrasse! Not sure what you will be to that end in Kempten, is a mystery to me. At first I am mistaken. Well, I wish you the best! For the time being I take note that you will be coming to Munich on March 18, but naturally expect before a well-written letter and no later than on the Ides of March - I suppose that you still know what that is from your Latin time, you babarian - an exact arrival message. I hope to devote myself to you then 'fully and completely', if I'm not sexually otherwise obliged. However there will be no drinking party arranged under my tutelage. Well, again many thanks for your letter and prompt reply!..." A couple on very small marginal tape repairs and tiny tears, else very good. Rohm did little to hide his homosexuality in his pre-Nazi days, A couple on very small marginal tape repairs and tiny tears, else very good. Rohm did little to hide his homosexuality in his pre-Nazi days. However, even before his murder, the Nazis had begun cracking down on homosexuality, banning organizations, burning books, and arresting the first of some 100,000. Around 15,000 gays were sent to concentration camps, where some were experimented upon in bizarre efforts to find a “cure†for their sexual orientation. 10: JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP USD 1,000 - 1,500 JOACHIM VON RIBBENTROP(1893 - 1946) Nazi foreign minister, the first of the Nuremberg defendants to hang on October 16, 1946. Fine association A.L.S. "Ribbentrop" on London hotel letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., London, June 27, 1933 to HEINRICH HIMMLER (1900-1945) Hitler's Chief of the SS and Gestapo. Von Ribbentropp displays his disdain for Himmler while accepting an honorary position in the SS. In part: "My dear Herr Himmler, From Berlin I received the order from the Reichsfuhrung-SS accepting me with the rank of Standartenfuhrer. I was very happy to receive your acceptance into this fantastic formation which you created to which Germany owes so much, and I will always proudly wear its black honorary cloth. The beginning of next week I will be back in Berlin, and I hope that we see each other soon so that the freshly-made standartenfuhrer can present himself and his new honor..." This letter, by German standards rather disrespectful ("Herr Himmler") and dripping with sarcasm, is initialed by HEINRICH HIMMLER at top. File holes at left margin, else very good. "Himmler's contempt for Ribbentrop's efficiency was...tempered by some sympathy in regard to his position [regarding class consciousness]." "The SS". Gerard Reitlinger. p. 114 Bid Live Online at LiveAuctioneers.com Page 3 Spring Auction 2018 Part I 11: HEINRICH HIMMLER USD 1,200 - 1,500 HEINRICH HIMMLER(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the SS and Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremburg. HIMMLER SWEARS INTO THE SS THE LEADER OF EINSATZGRUPPEN IN THE BALTIC STATES Fine association D.S., 1p. large folio, [n.p.], Jan. 11, 1937, the "Protocol on the swearing-in ceremony of SS Gruppenführer Hans Ad[olf] Prutzmann as Keeper of the Blood and Life Law of the Schutzstaffel", a pre-printed form with the loyalty oath to Himmler and the SS, with rank, name, and date "11. January 1937" written in ink. Himmler has signed at bottom in his customary green indelible pencil. Lower part of first initial a bit light, file holes at left margin, else very good. HANS ADOLF PRUTZMANN (1901–1945) was a high-ranking SS official. From June to November 1941, he served as the Higher SS and Police Leader in the Army Group North Rear Area in the occupied Soviet Union. In this capacity, he oversaw the activities of the Einsatzgruppen detachments that led to the murder of tens of thousands of Jews and later he ordered the removal to ghettos of over 100,000 more Jews. Transferred to the Ukraine where he commanded a "kampfgruppe", then returned to Berlin to train "Werewolf" forces. Captured by the British and committed suicide. 12: FALLSCHIRMJAGER GENERAL EUGEN MEINDL'S P.O.W. CAMP USD 1,200 - 1,500 FALLSCHIRMJAGER GENERAL EUGEN MEINDL'S P.O.W. CAMP SKETCHESFascinating group of nine pencil sketches, each 7 1/4" x 9 3/4", executed by German prisoners held at the Grizedale Hall prisoner of war camp in England at the end of World War II. The sketches included in this collection were executed by two distinct artists, the more well-known being Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager general EUGEN MEINDL (1892-1951), commander of the II. Fallschirmkorps and recipient of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Meindl executes three of the sketches presented here, all depicting a fellow prisoner. One, a chest-up view of his subject with his face embellished with watercolor, bears Meindl's signature in pencil, adding the inscription "Gen. d[er] Fallsch[irm]. Truppe - Kom. Gen. d. II Fallsch. Korps. zu Erinnerung von [in memory of] P.O.W. Camp 1 [Grizedale Hall], 6. I. 46. [Jan. 6, 1946]" A second sketch, depicting the same subject seated at a table completing a sketch of his own, is signed with Meindl's initial "M" in pencil, adding the date "15. 11. 45." The third sketch is unsigned, but depicts the same subject and is in the same style as Meindl's two signed sketches. The remaining six sketches were executed by Meindl's fellow prisoner, who signs five of the works "H. Stemmer". It would appear that Stemmer is the subject of Meindl's three sketches, based on the shared paper and the Meindl's depiction of his subject sketching in one scene. Stemmer's works include two views of Meindl himself, one a chest-up three-fourths view of the general smoking a cigarette, and the other a profile study of his face, including details of his ear. Two further views (one unsigned and possibly executed instead by Meindl) depict Grizedale Hall itself, both showing prisoner huts on the grounds and one also depicting the barbed wire fence surrounding the compound. The final two sketches depict large trees on the grounds, both also including views of the perimeter fence. The sketches show toning from having been matted, some slight foxing, mounting remnants on the verso, and pin holes and paper loss to the corners, nevertheless very good. Eugen Meindl participated in numerous actions throughout the war, including Narvik in Norway and the invasion of Crete, and as part of the defending German forces during Operation Market-Garden. Very little information is available regarding H. Stemmer, other than that he was an NSDAP official in Cologne. He also designed a poster advertising the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, offered elsewhere in this sale. The manor house Grizedale Hall was taken over by the War Office as No. 1 POW Camp (Officers) in 1939, and held such notables as Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, U-boat commanders Otto Kretschmer and Werner Lott, SS General Maximillian von Herff, and Luftwaffe ace Franz von Werra, who escaped from the camp but was recaptured. 13: "LORD HAW-HAW" WILLIAM JOYCE USD 750 - 1,000 "LORD HAW-HAW" WILLIAM JOYCEWILLIAM JOYCE (1906 - 1946) "Lord Haw-Haw". American-born, Anglo-Irish Fascist politician and Nazi propaganda broadcaster to the United Kingdom during World War II. He took German citizenship in 1940. He was convicted of one count of high treason in 1945 and was sentenced to death by hanging. Very rare signed book, his "Twilight Over England", (Berlin: International Verlag), 1940. First edition in light brown cloth with red titles, 168pp. 8vo. Inscribed in pencil on the front flyleaf from his exile in Germany: "To E.L. in memory of the Caterpillar Will". Accompanied by a related letter to an owner of the book by British foreign journalist and novelist REBECCA WEST (1892 - 1983) on both sides of her 12mo. correspondence card, Ibstone, [n.d.]. In part: "...The International Verlag printed books for distribution among prisoners of war and in neutral and Commonwealth countries...What surprises me is that they published a book by William Joyce ["Twilight Over England"] so early in the war for the Germans thought little of him at first. It's enormously lacking in punch...I think the Caterpillar was the name of a cafe frequented by the traitor[?] broadcasters...E.L. I will try to identify. I can't remember who Lady Anne Brigham was..." Two pieces, very good. 14: (ENOLA GAY CREWMEMBERS) USD 400 - 600 (ENOLA GAY CREWMEMBERS)Fine I.S.P., 8" x 10" b/w, a depiction of the atomic "mushroom cloud" rising over the Japanese city of Hiroshima following its atomic bombing by the Enola Gay on Aug. 6, 1945. The photo is signed by seven of the crewmembers who were aboard the B-29 during the attack: Pilot PAUL TIBBETS (1915-2007), navigator THEODORE "DUTCH" VAN KIRK (1921-2014), bombardier TOM FEREBEE (1918-2000), radioman DICK NELSON (1925-2003), radar countermeasures officer JACOB BESER (1921-1992), tail gunner and unofficial photographer GEORGE CARON (1919-1995), and weapon test officer MORRIS JEPPSON (1922-2010).
