Media conversion: Daten- und Lichtsatz-Service, Wiirzburg. 2156/3150-543210 Foreword Volume 49 of the series Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, published by the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Heidelberg, is the first one which is produced in collaboration with the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe. The Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Heidelberg (ARI) has a long tradition in astro nomical bibliography. Starting in 1910 at Berlin, it edited the "Astronomischer Jahresbericht" (AJB). Altogether, 68 volumes of the AJB were published until 1968. The use of the German language in the AJB made this work difficult to understand for most users. Therefore, the ARI started in 1969 to publish the series "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts" (AAA), in which the English language is used whenever possible. In 1977, the Federal Government and the Governments of the States of the Federal Republic of Germany founded a new institution: the "Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH" (FIZ). Among other duties, the FIZ has the task of providing information services in physics, inclusive of astronomy and astrophysics. For this purpose, a special data bank PHYS was created which provides also bibliograph ical information on astronomy and astrophysics. Due to the strong overlap in the bibliographic activities of ARI and FIZ, the governments proposed a close collaboration between ARI and FIZ in the field of the astronomical bibliography in order to avoid an unnecessary duplication of work. Due to various difficulties, it took some time to organize such a collabora tion. After I became director of the ARI in 1985, I started new negotiations with the FIZ on these matters. It was very much due to the friendly and cooperative attitude of the scientific director of the FIZ, Dr. Werner Rittberger, and his colleagues that we were able to sign an agreement between FIZ and ARI in 1988. According to this agreement, the ARI and the FIZ combine their efforts for producing a comprehensive astronomical bibliography. This is mainly done by sharing the technical recording and the scientific evaluation of documents for the astronomical bibliography and by exchanging this information in machine readable form. The ARI continues to produce AAA as a printed bibliography. It does not, however, distribute this bibliographic information in machine-readable form. The FIZ provides an on-line data bank, called PHYS, which includes the common astronomical bibliography. The data bank PHYS of the FIZ is made available through the Scientific and Technical Information Network STN International. The address of STN is given at the end of the Introduction. VI Foreword The introduction of new technical facilities and of a completely new software at the ARI, needed for the cooperation with FIZ, caused a slight delay in the produc tion of this volume. We hope that we can speed-up the editing of the next volumes. Since the physical size of the volumes of AAA was already quite large and since the cooperation with FIZ increases the size further, we have decided to split each volume of AAA physically into two parts, called A and B. They represent, how ever, still a logical unit, and are therefore not sold separately. We hope very much that the new arrangements for producing the astronomical bibliography will be found useful by the astronomical community and by other users. Roland Wielen Director Astronomisches Rechen-Institut Preface Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documen tation of the literature concerning all aspects of astronomy, astrophysics, and their border fields. It is devoted to the recording, summarizing, and indexing of the relevant publications throughout the world. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in close cooperation with the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe. The work is done under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 49 records literature published in 1989 and received before November 30, 1989. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are included too. The input work was shared between the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe and the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut. We thank our Karlsruhe colleagues Ms. lnge Ernst and Mr. Wolfgang Liick for their willing and effective cooperation. We acknowledge with thanks contributions of our colleagues all over the world. Last but not least we express our gratitude to all organizations, observatories, and publishers which provide us with complimen tary copies of their publications. The recording and correction was done by our technical staff members Ms. Helga Ballmann, Ms. Monika Kohl, Ms. Sylvia Matyssek, and Ms. Utta-Barbara Stege mann. Mr. Werner Buchholz and Mr. Andreas Minikin supported our task by careful proofreading. It is a pleasure to thank them all for their encouragement.
