40 BASTERIA, Vol. 61, JVo. 1-3, 1997 Limax flavus L. synanthropical in Madagascar (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Limacidae) A.J. de Winter Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, P.O. Box 9517,2300 RALeiden, The Netherlands The slug Limaxflavus Linné, 1758, is reported for the first time from Madagascar, living synanthropicallyin the city ofAntananarivo. Keywords: Gastropoda,Pulmonata,Limacidae,Limaxflavus, introduced species, Madagascar. Whilst examining a collection ofnon-marine molluscs from Madagascar, recently obtained by Dr. C.Jongkind, four specimens ofthe slug Limax (Limacus)flavus Linne, 1758, were encountered. The identificationwas ascertained by study ofthe genitalia ofonespecimen. The slugs were collectedin December 1996from thewallsofahouse in Antananarivo, together with a specimen ofBradybaena similaris(Ferussac, 1821). Since L.flavusisnotmentionedinthelatestoverview ofthepulmonate landsnailsofMadagascar (Fischer-Piette et al., 1994), nor in the checklist by Van Bruggen (1980), this is likely to be the first record on the island. Originally L.flavus probably inhabitedthe Mediterraneanarea, but the species now occurs synanthropically in much of Central and Western Europe as well (Kerney & Cameron, 1983).It hasbeen introducedinto NorthAmerica(Chichester & Getz, 1969), Australia (Smith, 1992), New Zealand(Barker, 1982), St. Helena (Gittenberger, 1980), and, wellbefore 1900, in South Africa (Altena, 1966). Its self-fertilizing ability (Evans, 1983) has probably facilitated its spread. I am indebted to CarelJongkind for putting his collection at my disposal. The discussed specimens are now in the National Museum ofNatural History, Leiden. REFERENCES ALTENA,C.O.VANREGTEREN, 1966.
