Visit Ireland.com W ELCOME AA warm Irish welcome to the 55th Anniversary Dinner of the Ireland-U.S. Council. As President of the Council it is always a pleasant duty for me to extend greetings to this annual occasion when we celebrate, on behalf of the entire Council membership in the United States and throughout Ireland, the Council’s continued engagement of our core mission. This past year has seen much change in Ireland and in the United States. However, from the vantage point we occupy in the Ireland-U.S. Council, I am happy to report that the business bonds and commercial connections between America and Ireland, North and South, have never ever been stronger, deeper or more durable than they are now. Brian W. Stack It has been ten long years since the calamitous real estate crash which precipitated a financial industry cataclysm that was especially brutal and harsh in Ireland. What a difference can be made in a decade with careful, smart, energetic and prudent managing of a difficult economic problem. Tonight the Ireland-U.S. Councilis delighted to hail, through our honoree Bernard Byrne, CEO of AIB Group, the milestone return to financial health achieved by one of Ireland’s largest banking groups. The sale into private hands of a large chunk of AIB Group stock ownership by Ireland’s Government marks a true watershed event. With the benefit of hindsight we can clearly see the wisdom of the Government in Dublin in rescuing Ireland’s banking system ten years ago. It stands as testimony to the faith which people in Ireland have in the system of free enterprise. I must always underline how thankful we are for the support and participation received during this past year from Council members and from so many benefactors, patrons and sponsors. The encouragement, assistance and support you have offered has been most heartening. It has also been essential in helping us to sustain the organization’s roster of programs and activities during this past year. Because of your support, we have been enabled to continue to engage the core mission of the organization in meaningful ways. In working to enhance and strengthen those important business bonds and commercial connections between the United States and Ireland, we hope to make a worthwhile contribution to the betterment of the economic circumstances of all the people in the United States and in Ireland, north and south. Improved and expanded investment, trade and tourism in both directions between America and Ireland is not a zero-sum game – it betters the lives, livelihoods and economic circumstances of everybody. The very important business links that connect America and Ireland in capital investment, trade, tourism, technology transfer and so much more have flourished during this past year. These are tangible and resilient connections that require smart attention and careful nurturing. Our hope is that in the coming year, we in the Ireland-U.S. Council can assist the process of strengthening and expanding these bonds that bind America aBnd Irriealannd eSver ctloasecr.k Brian W.
