Lauren, our only child, was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of thirty-six, and our world as we knew it came to an end. We would have less than three more years together, and even that did not prepare her mom, Ginny, and me for the enormity of the grief we would experience when her courageous battle was lost. Trying to come to terms with our loss inspired me to write this book about a beautiful young lady who believed that the “pen is mightier than the sword.” Lauren chose to use her pen as a light to shine into dark places, exposing society’s many shortcomings. Through her writing, Lauren championed the cause for abused chil- dren, the elderly, and the homeless in an attempt to make life better for all; she truly became a voice for the voiceless. A most loving and caring daughter, her passing has left a void in our life that will never be filled. We desperately want to understand the reason that a beautiful, healthy, and talented young lady who was not a heavy smoker came to contract this scourge of a disease. Our ix
