PREFACE Subclass KB, Religious Law, is currently in the process of being developed by Jolande E. Goldberg, law classification specialist in the Cataloging Policy and Support Office. Subclasses KBR, History of Canon Law, and KBU, Law of the Roman Catholic Church. The Holy See, the first two subclasses to be completed, were published in 2000. The 2004 edition included, in addition to those two subclasses, three new subclasses that were developed between 2000 and 2004: KB, Religious Law in General. Comparative Religious Law. Jurisprudence; KBM, Jewish Law. Halakah; and KBP, Islamic Law. Shariah. Fiqh. This 2008 edition includes additions and changes that have been made to these subclasses between 2004 and 2008. For this edition, Arabic script has been provided for many of the proper names and Arabic terms in subclass KBP, in addition to their Latin counterparts. Future editions of KB will incorporate additional subclasses until all of the KB subclasses have been completed. Classification numbers or spans of numbers that appear in parentheses are formerly valid numbers that are now obsolete. Numbers or spans that appear in angle brackets are optional numbers that have never been used at the Library of Congress but^re provided for other libraries that wish to use them. In most cases, a parenthesized or angle-bracketed number is accompanied by a “see” reference directing the user to the actual number that the Library of Congress currently uses, or a note explaining Library of Congres% practice. Access to the online version of the full Library of Congress Classification is available on the World Wide Web by subscription to Classification Web. Details about ordering and pricing may be obtained from the Cataloging Distribution Service at <http://www.loc.gov/cds/> New or revised numbers and captions are added to the L.C. Classification schedules as a result of development proposals made by the cataloging staff of the Library of Congress and cooperating institutions. Upon approval of these proposals by the weekly editorial meeting of the Cataloging Policy and Support Office, new classification records are created or existing records are revised in the master classification database. Weekly lists of newly approved or revised classification numbers and captions are posted on the World Wide Web at <http://www.loc.gov/aba/cataloging/classification/weeklylists/> Kent Griffiths, assistant editor of classification schedules, is responsible for creating new classification records, maintaining the master database, and creating index terms for the captions. The Library of Congress gratefully acknowledges the assistance and support of the Advisory Committee on LC Law Classification during the development of the major classes of religious law presented in this volume. From the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, Professor Laurent Mayali, Director, Robbins Collection, and Thomas H. Reynolds, Associate Director of the Library (now retired), provided funding and other support that enabled the law classification specialist to conduct an in-depth study of the Robbins Collection on Canon and Roman law, which laid the groundwork for subclasses KBR and KBU. The Library also wishes to extend its thanks to those law libraries who have generously contributed staff resources to the development of the schedules on Jewish law (KBM) and Islamic law (KBP): M. Kathleen Price, Director and Professor of Law, and Professor Noah Feldman of New York University Law School Library and Faculty; Professor Harry S. Martin, Librarian and Professor of Law, Harvard Law School Library; the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School, in particular Professor Frank Vogel, Director, Peri Bearman, Associate Director, Lesley Wilkins, Bibliographer of the Islamic World, and Aron Zysow, Research Associate. The Library also extends its thanks to Professor Michel Theriault, Universite Saint-Paul, Faculte de Droit Canonique, for his critique and encouragement during the final drafting stage of the schedules. Recognition is also due to Oberstudienrat Helmut Hoerr, Bad Homburg/Germany, and Dario C. Ferreira, Senior Legal Research Analyst and Librarian (Law-Romance Languages), Law Library of Congress, for reviewing and editing the Latin portions of the text. In addition, the Library would like to express its gratitude to William Kopycki, University of Pennsylvania, for his assistance in providing the Arabic script for subclass KBP. Barbara B.
