PREFACE It Class D, History, was first drafted in 1901 and after undergoing revision was published in 1916. Two supplements were published: European War (first edition, 1921; second edition, 1933; reprinted in 1954 with additions and changes), and Second World War (1947). The second edition of class D was published in 1959, containing additions and changes through June 1957. A reprint edition was published in 1966, containing a supplementary section of additions and changes through July 1965. The third edition was published in five parts between 1987 and 1990: D-DJ, DJK-DK, DL-DR, DS, and DT-DX. Subclasses DS-DX, History of Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc., were published in a single edition in 1998, complemented by a 2001 edition of D-DR. This 2008 edition of DS-DX cumulates all additions and changes that have been made since the publication of the 1998 edition. Classification numbers or spans of numbers that appear in parentheses are formerly valid numbers that are now obsolete. Numbers or spans that appear in angle brackets are optional numbers that have never been used at the Library of Congress but are provided for other libraries that wish to use them. In most cases, a parenthesized or angle-bracketed number is accompanied by a “see” reference directing the user to the actual number that the Library of Congress currently uses, or a note explaining Library of Congress practice. Access to the online version of the full Library of Congress Classification is available on the World Wide Web by subscription to Classification Web. Deta°ils about ordering and pricing may be obtained from the Cataloging Distribution Service at <http://www.loc.gov/cds/> New or revised numbers and captions are added to the L.C. Classification schedules as a result of development proposals made by the cataloging staff of the Library of Congress and cooperating institutions. Upon approval of these proposals by the weekly editorial meeting of the Cataloging Policy and Support Office, new classification records are created or existing records are revised in the master classification database. Weekly lists of newly approved or revised classification numbers and captions are posted on the World Wide Web at <http://www.loc.gov/aba/cataloging/classification/weekIyiists/> The senior cataloging policy specialists in the Cataloging Policy and Support Office are responsible for coordinating the overall intellectual and editorial content of class D and its various subclasses. Kent Griffiths, assistant editor, creates new classification records and their associated index terms, and maintains the master database. Barbara B.
