Brian Stewart, Senior Vice President, Research and Development, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Vice President, Re search and Development, Boehringer Ingelheim Corporation, died April 1, 1987. Dr. Stewart was a graduate of Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University of London, and attended Harvard Graduate School of Busi ness. He served for five years during World War II in the Royal Air Force, as a fighter pilot, for which he won the Distinguished Flying Cross. Throughout his 30-year career with Boehringer Ingelheim, Dr. Stewart was a dedicated scientist-clinician whose personal and professional stan dards of excellence were the foundation of Boehringer Ingelheim's Re search and Development programs. Prior to joining Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, he was Managing Director from 1962 to 1977 of Boeh ringer's Pharma Research Ltd. in Montreal. Beginning in 1978, he and his colleagues moved to Ridgefield, Connecticut, to build Boehringer's U.S. Research and Development site. His vision and dedication were responsible for our current research commitment efforts to discover ways to therapeutically regulate clinically relevant aspects of leukocyte adhe sion. His colleagues remember him with fondness. We wish to dedicate this scientific meeting to that memory. Alan S. Rosenthal, M.D. December 12, 1988 Acknowledgments The editors wish to offer their sincere thanks to Dr. Ronald Faanes and Ms. Leah Neumaier for their organizational and administrative contri butions. It was their enthusiasm and perseverance that accounted for the reality of having a symposium on leukocyte adhesion at Titisee, West Germany and for the successful completion of this book. We would also like to thank Dr. med Hasso Schroeder for his assistance in arranging for the symposium and details during our stay.
