Printed on acid-free paper Humana Press is part of Springer Science+Business Media (www.springer.com) Preface There is no shortage of multiauthored books describing management of acute and chronic leukemias and myelodysplastic syndromes. However, we believe that this book has several distinctive features. All the authors are members of a single academic center. While the authors’ views on treatment approaches necessarily differ, the book’s single-center nature will hopefully provide the reader with a relatively unifi ed approach to management. This theme is furthered by the inclusion of three chapters on the role of allogeneic transplant, befi tting the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s long history of leadership in this discipline. There are both chap- ters on supportive care and on long-term complications of successful treatment, another long-standing interest of the center. The authors’ expertise has prompted the editors to give them wide latitude in writing the chapters. In general, the chapter s combine a thorough review of the literature and their own perspectives. The editors are confi dent that the chapters are uniformly excellent and informative. The focus of this book is clinical. The intended audience is thus all physicians treating patients with acute or chronic leukemias or myelodysplasia. The many questions the authors receive from community oncologists suggest that this audience is large. Seattle, WA, USA Elihu H. Estey Seattle, WA, USA Frederick R.
