Dearall,

andtointroducemynewroleofassociateacademicofficerforLetterkennyUniversity
Hospital. As such I plan to develop strategy and promote education and research
throughoutthemanydisciplinesandhealthprofessionsinourinstitution. Allhealth-
relatedresearchmustultimatelyadvancethequalityofpatientcare. Inadditionto
investigating novel treatments, we must also investigate our processes and the
effectiveness of such treatment in order to learn and advance the effective use of
resourcelocally. Itisencouragingtoseethemultipledisciplineswhohavesubmitted

nowbecomeastandardandhugelysuccessfulfeatureofourHospitalCalendarand
continues to celebrate the quantity, range, and quality of multi-disciplinary Clinical
Research Undertaking at Letterkenny General Hospital. A commitment to and
enthusiasmforClinicalResearchisahallmarkofanypatientcentredprogressivehospital
and I am both proud and honoured to be invited to introduce this programme and
abstractsforthe2015ResearchSymposium.
In the introduction to last years Symposium and Abstracts booklet I referenced the
continuingdevelopmentofClinicalEducationandResearchinLGHdespitetheincredible
challengeswehadfacedoverthepreviousmonths.Asthehospitalcontinuestorebuild
itsfacilitiesandreinstateitsservicesthiscommitmenttoClinicalEducationandResearch
remainsattheheartofourMission.InthelastnumberofweekstheHospitalNamehas
beenrebranded to LetterkennyUniversityHospitalagain reinforcing this criticallink
betweenhealthcareprovisionandclinicaleducationwhichiscriticaltoensuringquality
effectivepatientcare.
InconclusionIrepeateveryyearmyimmutablebeliefthatthedevelopmentofactive
research programmes not only benefits the participants, but of greater importance
participationinclinicaltrialsandclinicalresearchprovideopportunitiestoourpatients
to benefit from cutting edge clinical developments and newly emerging treatments
modalities.Furthermore,theactiveengagementofstaffinclinicalresearchcontributes
to the development of a highly skilled, up to date clinical environment and culture
allowingpatientstoreceivetheveryhigheststandardsinclinicalcare.Inthiscontext,My

repetitionoftheseviewsreflectsbothmyandtheHospitalManagementTeamsabsolute
commitmenttopromotingclinicaleducationandresearchasLetterkenny. Itiswith
these thoughts and goals in mind that I am delighted to introduce today's Research
Symposiumandcongratulatetheorganisers,onbehalfoftheHospitalManagement
Team, our staff, our patients and myself personally. I wish all the participants every

AtLetterkennyUniversityHospitaltodayandinthefutureNurses,Midwives,Students
andHealthcareAssistants,willcontinuetohaveavitalroletoplayinthedeliveryofour
healthcareservices.Thechallengeistoreshapeandredefineservicestoembracethe
complexities of the 21st Century. Our vision for the development of Nursing and
Midwifery practice at Letterkenny General Hospital combines a compassionate care
givingapproachwithsomeofthemostadvancedtechnologies,whichtogetherprovide
thecornerstoneofourcommitmenttoourpatientsandtheirfamilies.
ANursingandMidwiferyStrategyiscriticalinestablishingacoherentdirectionbywhich
nurses, midwives, students and healthcare assistants can develop and deliver
appropriate,knowledgeableandskilledpractice.Thisstrategyisimportantforallour
departments,divisionsandpeopleinDonegalandhasbeendevelopedtosupportand
complementactivityineveryarea.
Itiscrucialthatthisstrategyisunderpinnedwithevidenceandresearchfromwithinthe
healthcareliterature.Ibelieveitisvitaltoourpatientsthatwepromoteallresearch
whichisactivelygeneratedbyourpractitionerstoensurethatwearedeliveringcare
whichhasasoundevidencebase.

Dr. M. Petrousjka van den Tol started her training as general
surgeonin1997intheGeneralHospitalofDelft,ReinierdeGraaf
Gasthuis,andfinishedhertrainingintheUniversityHospitalof
Rotterdam, Erasmus Medical Center in 2002. During her
traineeshipshefinishedherthesisentitles”InfluenceofPeritoneal
Trauma on Postoperative Adhesion Formation and Intra-
AbdominalTumourRecurrence”in2001.From2002untilnowsheWorksinUniversity
HospitalofAmsterdam,VUMMedicalCenter.FirstasaCHIVOonologicalsurgeryand
after that as a member of the staff of Surgical Oncology. She works in the broad
oncologicalfieldbutwithaspecialinterestandexpertiseinthefieldofcolorectalliver
metastases(CRLM)andbreastcancerandsarcomasurgery.Herspecialinterestinthe
treatmentofCRLMandbreastcanerfurthershowsinherresearchactivitiesinthefield
ofnewimagingtoolsandimageguidedsurgeryanddevelopmentofnewimageguided
localtreatmentoptionsforboth.Obviouslyherresearchactivitiesareperformedinclose
collaboration with the department of radiology/nuclear medicine and specially
interventionalradiology
