I am Asbjörn Torvǫl and this book is somewhat of a compilation of some of the earliest pieces I have written in spirituality. Many of these concepts I have written about concern the practice of Magick and the rest are more relative to my work in Asatru/Heathenry and Norse Magick. As a small introduction, I would like to give you a glimpse into my history so you can better understand my work as a Norse Vitki—Norse Sorcerer. My history goes back quite a long way. I was born in Ab- erdeen, Scotland into a Christian family. My mother and her side of the family went to church often and so as a child I was pulled along with them, my father however wasn’t religious at all and due to that I was never baptized. I had a pretty average childhood although I was subject to bullying being different than most kids my age. At the age of around seven I began to question religion. It wasn’t so much that I didn’t believe in Christianity, but more due to the fact my curiosity for other religions and paths lead me onto other things. As a result of that curiosity I stopped going to church and started my jour- ney into discovery. From that point on I spent a lot of my spare time reading books and learning about other religions. It started with mainstream religions such as Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism « 5 » Lessons of a Young Heathen but once I hit secondary school (high school) that took an even deeper aspect of my life. I knew that I wanted to find the path that was right for me and so I searched far and wide for it. At school I took religion, philosophy, and spirituality as a subject, and it was there my love for eastern traditions such as Shinto and Taoism came to be a big part in my life. With hav- ing access to the internet still very young I found my very first spiritual mentor. The man who helped guide me from that young age con- sidered himself a Norseman and this is the point in my life that Norse symbolism and influence began to be present alt- hough I had not yet fully embraced it. I started to learn about universal energies, and basic spiritual and magickal principles such as Hermeticism and Thelema. This man opened many doors for me into discovering the pagan world. From then until my late teens I had delved into study and practice with a quenchless thirst for truth and purpose. Her- meticism, Thelema, Talismanic magick, Demonology, West- ern ceremonial magick and Solomonic magick. Not to mention my work with different pagan communities and pan- theons. Once I reached my late teens around 17-18 I began to grow a fascination for Necromancy. A good friend of mine was a necromantic practitioner and one day he let me have a read of one of the books he had. That book opened up my fas- cination for the study of life and death. From that point on I began to read and develop my studies in a more specialized area. It was during this time that I met my wife and moved over to America where my true calling began. Like most of my paths I was somewhat of a puzzle piece that could never fit in to any tradition or path. I would get so far in and realize that it just didn’t fit and this was true of my necromancy too. I had been searching for so long and I just « 6 » Lessons of a Young Heathen couldn’t find that right place. Then it happened. I started hav- ing dreams about Thor. Every night for two weeks these dreams were waking me up several times a night, causing me sleep deprivation. I followed my gut, and purchased a Thor’s hammer and a small statue of Thor. With a small altar and an offering my life changed. I had reached out to Thor with all that I had and from there he guided me to begin learning the Norse Tradition of magick and led me to the Asatru path. From that point I have contin- ued to study and work with the Gods having great results. This is no doubt the path I am meant to walk on. With my close work with Odin I had found my teacher who is still teaching me to this day. A great man called Dean Kirkland who is teaching me the path of the Vitki. Through him and many other sources I continue to progress on my path and help share what I have learned and what I will continue to learn with other around me. My goal is to teach and to continue learning. To lead by example in our community and offer my services to those who need them. I hope this small introduction and my history gives you some insight into the work you will find in these next pages. My work is far from perfect and I will say that bear in mind, the work written from here on in, is my own personal take on Magick and Norse Sorcery. « 7 » Lessons of a Young Heathen The Truth About Magick The Science and Art of causing Change to occur in con- formity with Will. —ALEISTER CROWLEY O NE of the most common and the most accurate descrip- tion of magick was written by Aleister Crowley in con- text of Thelema (a religion based on a philosophical law by the name of Thelema). In this short description, we can dismiss many of the misconceptions around what magick is. Magick isn’t mystical, or exclusive. It is not a skill you can achieve or an ability you can acquire. Magick is built into your very es- sence. Simply put, magick is the mind. It is one of the under- lying mechanics of life itself and even the most mundane of things are indeed “magickal” by this definition. In Crowley’s description, he suggests that magick is “action”, and while this is true it is not the whole truth. Magick is in thought, emotion and action, bleeding into everything that we do. Everyone is performing magick and on a continuous basis. You do not have to be aware of it, nor does it need to be purely inten- tional. The difference between the magician and everyone else, is that the magician is aware of, involved with, and in control of his or her own magick. All magick is psychological in nature. Extensive rituals, magical tools and exaggerated drama does have its place however it is not essential. A great « 8 » Lessons of a Young Heathen magician can use magick anytime and anywhere within his own mind. Every magician no matter how advanced is using their own mind, psychologically to manifest results and change. The deeper you look into your own mind, its respon- sibility, its impact on your life and how it affects your living conditions, the more this becomes apparent. I hold the belief that Magic is not ‘Magical’, that it does not ‘just happen’, nor is it ‘miraculous’, I see it as a sci- entific system based on a process that we have yet to fully understand scientifically. —S. BEN QAYIN With the misconceptions cleared up and magick defined we can then draw out another important point on magick. As S. Ben Qayin has said “magic is not magical” and this is the most important principle. However, “science” is the next most important point to magick. It is not uncommon to find sci- ence and spirituality at war with each other and this is because popular traditions and fields of study tell us that it must be one or the other. We are told it must be either science or spir- ituality. The reality is much different as science and spiritual- ity, as it concerns real magick goes hand in hand. When you combine science and spirituality and have them complement each other, you not only get to debunk false information and fraudulent scams but also create a potential to elevate yourself and better your own experience of life. In this sense the study and practice of magick, is the study and practice of scientific spirituality. To put this principle simply, Magick is science through the eyes of spiritualism. Every thought is a prayer and every word is a spell. This is another commonly used quote to define magick and it is a great starting point in understanding not just what « 9 »
