It explores the imprint that imperial institutions, organizational principles, practices andlogicshaveleftonthemodernworld.Itshowsthatmanyfeaturesof the contemporary world – modern armies, multiculturalism, globalized finance, modern city states, the United Nations – have been profoundly shaped by past empires.
