Balancedprecariously,thetruckshiftedfor- wardasthebodyofthedeerrolledoffthehood,theweighttippingittowards thebottomofthehill. Everythingshook. Lancegrippedthewheel,bloodstreamingfrom hisheadandchokinghim.Asitgainedmomentum,thetruckhitaboulder buriedinthethickgrass. Thebackendroseabovethefront, sendingitintoa spiral. Timebecame sluggish, andapeacesettledoverhisbodyasithovered abovehisseat,weightless. Theedgesofhismindblurred, andmentalimages flickeredpasthiseyessofasttheyalmostmergedtogether. Cara'sfrecklesinthe sunshine. Hersmilewiththecrookedtooththatmadeherself-conscious. Maddie'swispybabyhair, curleddelicatelyatthebackofherhead. ButitwasthelastconversationhehadhadwithCarathatcontinuedtoreoc- curuntilitwastheonlymemoryrotatinginhismind. Lancesatatthekitchentablewithabowloftepidoatmeal,reading hisnewspaperforthethirdtime.
