Dr Emmanuel FABIANO Vice Chancellor University of Malawi Dr Emmanuel FABIANO has served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi since November 2009. He replaced Prof. Zimani Kadzamira, the former Vice Chancellor. Dr Fabiano is a Malawian from birth and he graduated with a B.Ed from the University of Malawi in 1977 where he majored in chemistry. He started his work as a staff associate in the same university soon after graduating. He obtained his M.Sc at the University of Warwick in 1980 and Ph.D at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1986. His main field of interest is natural products chemistry. He has also a working interest in science and technology education. He has supervised many students at M.Sc and Ph.D level. Before he became Vice Chancellor, Dr Fabiano served in several senior positions in the University including that of College Principal from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2005 to 2009. His vision for the University of Malawi is for the institution to become very efficient and effective in its utilization of resources. Clive is working mostly on population and climate change issues, and leading the Africa strategy under PAI’s Climate Initiative. Clive holds a M.A (Economics) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, with a specialization in Environment and Natural Resource Economics from the Centre for Environmental Economics Policy Research and Analysis in Africa (CEEPA) based at the University of Pretoria, South Africa; and a B.A (Economics and Sociology) from the University of Nairobi. Tichaona Pesanayi Policy and Programme Management SADC Regional Environmental Education Program Tichaona Pesanayi previously worked for an environmental NGO (Environment Africa), where he was responsible for Environmental Education/ Education for Sustainable Development (EE/ESD) and management of Eastern Zimbabwe - Western Mozambique region (2000-2008). He also worked for the Wildlife and Environment Society of Zimbabwe (1998-2000). He has conducted research with subsistence farming communities of practice to find out how farmers learn to be resilient and adapt to climate change, from each other and from extension agents. This work culminated in a Masters of Education (EE) thesis in 2007. Previously, he has participated in SADC research on vulnerability, health and the environment and another SADC research project on the implementation of the UNDESD in South Africa (2005-2006). After graduating from the University of Zimbabwe in 1987 with a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honors) he worked as an Accountant in the aviation, manufacturing and tourism sectors. In 2003 he obtained a Masters in Administration from the National University of Science and Technology. He has served as President of The Zimbabwe Council for Tourism, the apex Tourism Industry Association in Zimbabwe (2006-7), and by virtue of that position served on the Regional Tourism Board of Southern Africa (RETOSA). He sits on the Board Environment Africa, one of the leading environment lobby group in Southern Africa, and also on the Board of the Victoria Falls Green Fund. Prof. Shiv TRIPATHI Professor Mzumbe University Prof. Shiv TRIPATHI received Bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronics engineering from Karnatak University, Dharwad(India) and Master of Business Administration from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi(India). He was awarded Doctorate from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi(India) for his pioneering work in comparative management thoughts of the East and the West. During last 15 years of his academic career, he has served a number of academic institutions and universities in different capacities. Prior to joining the Mzumbe University, Tanzania in March, 2009, he was Dean, Faculty of Management Studies at VBS Purvanchal University (India). Dr. Benson Tembo Director General Malawi Broadcasting Cooporation Dr. Benson Tembo is Director General for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). Dr. Tembo began working at MBC since the 1970’s and he was the first head of MBC TV, at that time it was called Malawi Television. He was later posted on diplomatic mission before he returned to Malawi where he engaged in media consultancy. He holds a BA in Town and Country Planning obtained from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and an MSc in Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation specialising in Urban Land Administration from the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences (ITC). He has worked with Hampshire County Council in England (1990-1992) focusing on housing land supply, county structure planning and development control. From 2005 to date he works as the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) Programme Manager for Malawi overseeing a country programme portfolio that includes land and housing, slum upgrading, water and sanitation, disaster risk management as well as human settlements policy support. He is a corporate member and founding President of the Malawi Institute of Physical Planners (MIPP) as well as a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). Happy Edward MAKALA Operations Manager Habitat for Humanity Malawi Happy Edward MAKALA is a Malawian development professional with over 22 years of multidisciplinary professional experience working in Malawi, Southern Africa with expertise in such areas as programme design, implementation as well as grants acquisition in a humanitarian context at senior leadership and management level. For the past ten years or so, Happy Edward Makala has led teams in developing Country Strategic Plans (CSPs) that are aligned to regional and global strategic plans besides deputizing and covering National/Country Directors in the NGOs where he has worked. He is also a Lecturer in Research Methodology and Social Economies of Rural Livelihoods at ShareWorld Open University of Malawi where he is involved in academic research and teaching undergraduate students. Happy Edward Makala holds a Master of Science degree in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Metropolitan University, a Postgraduate degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Development Studies from the University of South Africa and currently reading for a Master of Arts degree in Development Studies from the University of South Africa pending submission of a dissertation (The Role of NGOs in Promoting Gender Equality in Development) in 2012. Catherine has a Master of Arts Degree in Environmental Planning for Developing countries from the University of Nottingham of the United Kingdom, a Bachelors Degree in Education (B.Ed) from the University of Malawi (Chancelloer College) majoring in Geography and Social Studies. She also has Post-graduate Diploma in Geo-Information Systems for Urban Applications from the ITC, the Netherlands. André Pelser Professor of Sociology University of Free State André Pelser holds a Ph.D. (Sociology) from the University of the Free State (Bloemfontein, South Africa). He started his career in 1985 as a researcher at the Human Sciences Research Council in Pretoria (South Africa) before joining the University of the Free State in 1990, where he is currently Professor of Sociology. He has consulted widely to numerous government departments, private companies (particularly mining companies) and international development agencies. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, books, chapters in books and research reports in the above mentioned fields. Some of André’s other professional involvements include acting as regular panelist, external reviewer and advisor to research institutions such as the National Research Foundation (South Africa), the Water Research Commission (South Africa), the National Agricultural Marketing Council (South Africa) the International Foundation of Science (Sweden), the Research Council of Norway and the African Climate Change Fellowship Programme (Tanzania). Her interests are in African feminism. Kabwila-Kapasula was the acting president of the Chancellor College Academic Staff Union that campaigned for academic freedom at the University of Malawi. She is a Senior Lecturer at Chancellor College. Howard Kasiya Country Programme Consultant, Co-ordinates AGALI Programme in Malawi Public Health Institute Howard Kasiya is also the National Director of the Adolescent Girls Advocacy Network – Malawi Chapter. Mr. Kasiya graduated at the Lilongwe College of Health Sciences in 1984 as a Clinical Officer who first became involved with HIV/AIDS Programmes in the early 1990’s whilst working with Ekwendeni Mission Hospital of the Christian Hospital Association of Malawi (CHAM) as an Assistant Medical Doctor. Mr. Kasiya established the first Hospital and Community Based HIV/AIDS programme in Malawi, as well as the first HIV/AIDS Programme targeting youths called “AIDS TOTO CLUBS”. Mr. Kasiya has worked for a Sub-Saharan HIV infection and AIDS Programme for the Canadian International Development Agency – CIDA as a Country Liaison Officer, issues of children with Firelight Foundation of USA, and in 2009 on issues of Adolescent Girls with AGALI. Seodi WHITE National Coordinator Women and Law in South Africa Research and Educational Trust Malawi Seodi WHITE is a multi-disciplinary trained lawyer, with experience in legal anthropology. Her main research interests are in Constitutionalism and women’s rights, legal pluralism, access to justice, HIV/AIDS, gender, culture and socialisation, property rights and sexual and reproductive health rights of women. She received her law degree from the University of Botswana and her Masters Degree in Gender and Development from the University of Sussex, Institute of Development Studies (IDS). She has been influential in achieving ground-breaking law through the conception and subsequent the enactment of the Prevention of Domestic Violence legislation in Malawi in 2006. In both 2006 and 2010, she led the NGO Delegation that presented Malawi civil society’s Shadow Reports to the United Nations CEDAW Committee. She is a practicing Nutritionist and Dietitian. Dr. Shawa is a long-time advocate of child wellbeing in Malawi, especially in the area of child nutrition. She has represented Malawi at various fora as a delegate, resource person, researcher and presenter. She holds a PhD in Nutrition and a Masters Degree in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Shawa also has specialized training in HIV and AIDS Counseling and Management; Nutrition Management of HIV, Sexual Reproductive Health, HIV and AIDS and Development. Bright SIBALE Managing Director Centre for Development Management Bright SIBALE holds a Diploma in Agriculture. a Diploma in Project Management, a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Master of Science in Farming Systems. Bright has worked with the Malawi Government in the Ministry of Gender and Community Development and the Department of Forestry. In 2002, Bright established the Centre for Development Management (CDM), as consulting company to provide technical assistance in research, training and consultancy, where he is Managing Director. Currently, he is providing monitoring and evaluation support to the “Enhancing Climate Resilience Programme” implemented in 11 districts in the country and funded by the Department for International Development of the United Kingdom. Bright is specialised in rural and agricultural development especially in the area of project planning and management and has just enrolled for a PhD programme in agricultural extension and rural development, with Bunda College. Rev Bossman Suzumile CHITHEKA after his four years Theological training at Nkhoma Theological College, received a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies at African Bible College in Malawi, a Postgraduate Diploma at University of Stellenbosch and currently Studying Masters in Theology (Church and Environment) at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. Rev Chitheka has written papers on Eco theology. He is also a Vice Chairman of Malawi Council of Churches as well as a member of SEFCEI. Rev Chitheka is interested in environmental issues and advocacy for Environmental Care and Earth keeping as a commandment given by God. Mark BOTOMANI Development Communications Specialist Swedish Cooperative Centre Mark BOTOMANI is currently working as Development Communications Specialist at Swedish Cooperative Centre (SCC) in Lilongwe, Malawi. Previously, Mark has worked in the private sector where he rose to the position of Regional Manager for one of the leading internet service providers in Malawi. As a result of his journalistic skills and experience and as part of his work, Mark contributes news articles on various topics, mainly on rural development to one of the leading newspapers in Malawi and some articles have also been published online. LEAD Africa Fellowship PPaann AAffrriiccaann SSeessssiioonn PRESENTERS - Day 4 Population and Climate Change - Towards Climate Compatible Development for Africa Dalitso KAFUWA Natural Resources Management Specialist World Bank Dalitso KAFUWA is currently supporting the Government of Malawi to formulate and implement the National Climate Change Programme, the Shire Basin Management Programme (phase 1 project), the Effective Management of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve Project and the Sustainable Management of Nyika Transfrontier Conservation Areas (Zambia & Malawi) among others. Dalitso holds a Master of Science Degree in Management of Natural Resources and Sustainable Agriculture from the then Agriculture University of Norway now known as Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture majoring in Rural Development from University of Malawi, Bunda College of Agriculture. Jo MCDONNEL Deputy Direct Africa programme, Climate and Development Knowledge Network Jo MCDONNEL is the Deputy Director of the Africa programme of the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). She also oversees CDKN’s technical assistance portfolio and manages projects that support African governments to develop climate compatible development polices and increase national access to climate finance. She previously worked for the Sustainability and Climate Change team at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (London), where she focused primarily on carbon measurement, management and reduction on a range of scales: from the national economies to company and product level. She also has interests in environmental economics and payment for ecosystem services. This programme supports knowledge sharing on climate compatible development in Africa. She previously worked for the City of Johannesburg municipality in the climate change unit, where she focused primarily on implementing sustainable energy interventions in low-income communities, climate change adaptation planning as well as managing a variety of stakeholder consultation processes and awareness raising programmes. Lisa holds a BA Honours in Development Studies, and is finalising an MSc in Environmental Studies. Doreen Chanje is the Chairperson for LEAD Malawi, and also sits on the Regional Board for LEAD-SEA. Doreen is Managing Director for Foodsec Consulting Ltd, and works as a consultant in the smallholder agriculture sector, with a focus on encouraging and supporting farming as a business. Doreen Chanje is passionate about economic empowerment through small-scale farming, by advocating principles of Sustainable Business, a concept that is achievable through initiatives such as Fairtrade. Doreen is married, and has two girls. She lives in Blantyre, Malawi’s commercial city. Doreen is the President of the Rotary Club of Blantyre. Stella GAMA Assistant Director of Forestry Department of Forestry Stella GAMA joined the Department of Forestry in 1997 as a forestry officer. She has worked as a forestry officer for forest reserves and plantation development. She has attained training in social forestry, project management and has experience in participatory forest management. She has worked on CBNRM policy issues at regional level with WWF sponsored CBNRM Forum. She has served as project manager for an African Development Bank funded Lilongwe Forestry project. Currently she is working on watershed management and climate change strategic planning whilst applying and ecosystems approach in multi-sector team environment. She is also a member of GHG Inventory Team for Forestry and Land Use in Malawi which is currently collecting data for the national communication.
