This year’s winners were Huy Tran and Elizabeth Baxley, and they are indeed well-deserving However, that award could have gone to any one of you. I know many of your stories, and they are extraordinary. Many of you immigrated to the United States from another country. Many of you hve in two (or more) languages. Many of you have endured poverty, illness, and unspeakable tragedy. All of you are coming of age in an increasingly complex and often confusing world. Growing up in 2018 is challenging. When confronted properly, the process of overcoming challenges can build strength, and I have seen this strength evident in so many of you. In the words of your valedictorian, Michelle Nguyen, “we are here today because we have found our voice.” The Class of 2018 will long be remembered for its creativity, outspokenness, I leadership, and service to others. Confronted with a national pohtical climate that was often hostile to immigrants or to anyone else considered outside the mainstream, you stood up and made your voice be heard. Your class refused to tolerate bullying, racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia. In the wake of the most tragic mass school shooting in our nation’s history, you gathered together and organized a walkout of 2,000 students on a bitterly cold day, that was the most extraordinary example of student I leadership I have seen in my 25 years at Lawrence High School. You did these things in communily, in sohdarlty, and in support of each other. I For the Class of 2018, service to others was not a line on a resume, but a caUing. Members of your class served meals at Cor Unum, cleaned the Spicket River, conducted! writing workshops at the Essex Projects, collected toys for Children’s Hospital, and supported each other through countless struggles. In doing so, you redefined what it I means to be a Lancer. On behalf of the faculty, I bid farewell to the Class of 2018. You have left a legacy that IwiU not soon be forgotten. Remember to always use your voice, and always be proud of your Lancer heritage.
