Just four years earlier she was elected as the state’s first female lieutenant governor when she ran with Gov. Marc Racicot. Since taking office in January 2001, her priorities have included retaining and creating good paying job opportunities for all Montanans, addressing appropriate tax reform policies in the state, and improving the education funding system for Montana’s public schools. To move forward economic development. Gov. Martz created the Office of Economic Opportunity during the 2001 Legislative session. This office is tasked with promoting Montana businesses, attracting complimentary businesses to the state and developing Montana’s work force for better paying jobs. In June 2002, Gov. Martz was elected chair of the Western Governors Association, the first Montana governor to ever be elected to this position. Gov. Martz was born July 28, 1943 in Big Timber to ranching parents. She graduated from Butte High School in 1961 and attended Eastern Montana College. She was a member of the 1963 U.S. World Speed Skating Team and the 1964 U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team. Gov. Martz worked as a field representative for U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns from 1989 to 1995. She has served as Butte Chamber of Commerce president and St. James Hospital Board of Directors vice chair. She and her husband, Harry Martz, own and operate a commercial solid-waste business in Butte. She has two grown children. 7 LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR KARL OHS Lt. Gov. Karl Ohs is widely known for his role in peacefully ending the Freemen standoff near Jordan, Montana. In 1996, at the request of the FBI, he served as principal negotiator, making 19 separate trips into the Freemen compound. His involvement earned him the 1998 Lou Peters Award given nationally by the FBI for public service. Lt. Gov. Ohs served in the Montana House of Representatives in 1995, 1997 and 1999 where he was majority whip in 1997 and 1999. The son of a Swedish immigrant, Lt. Gov. Ohs was born Nov. 18, 1946 in Havre and grew up in Phillips County, graduating from Malta High School in 1964. He studied agricultural economics at Montana State University-Bozeman and left just months away from a degree to return to help on the ranch when his father broke a leg during calving. The family later moved the ranching operation to Harrison, where he and his wife Sherri still ranch today. In 1988, Lt. Gov. Ohs founded and became chairman of Montana Agricultural Producers Inc., a coop for producing and marketing alternative crops. Since 1996, he and his wife have owned and operated several small businesses in southwestern Montana. He served on the Harrison School Board from 1974 to 1983, including four years as chairman. Currently, Lt. Gov. Ohs serves as chairman of the Drought Advisory Committee, chairman of the Governor’s Corrections Advisory Council and is the chair-elect of the National Lieutenant Governors Association. He has four children. Brad, Eric, Brian and Elizabeth, from his previous marriage, and his wife Sherri has four children from her former marriage.
