You’ve probably been exposed to the law of attraction from, “The Secret” or the work of Abraham-Hicks. But, “The Secret” is inapplicable without building some habits first. It’s also a gross oversimplification of the wrong lessons of the law of attraction. Abraham-Hicks, on the other hand, has a fantastic understanding of how to use the law of attraction, but their approach can seem a little woo-woo for some. You don’t have to have a basic understanding of the law of attraction to get something out of this book. If you don’t know what it is at all, you might be confused by some of the terms. Yet, my approach is weaved into something more core to human experience than a current fad. So, you will gain value whether or not you try to manifest things. Finally, this is for those with an open mind. You do have to be willing to do a little bit of inner work. The habits in this book are simple, repeatable, and subtly powerful. There’s nothing showy or impressive about them on the outside, but they can unlock your potential unlike any other self-help technique or life hack you’ve encountered. What is My Approach to the Law of Attraction? First and foremost, my approach to using the law of attraction is based on simplicity and functionality. These are universal laws, so it’s my intent to do justice to them by making them easy to understand and use. Habits are of great interest to many people because of how powerful they grow over time. That’s because habits are the ultimate passive form of self- improvement. Sure you have to exert a little effort to get them started, but once you do, you don’t really have to worry about consciously choosing to do them over and over again. This is already great, but when you add specific habits that improve your quality of life, the effect of habits starts compounding. One of my main focuses in life is to approach everything with as much ease as possible. It’s like the idea of working smart (not hard) multiplied. Some people call this laziness, but I just know that there’s a better way. Take it from me, it’s a lot easier to move towards the things you want in your life habitually than it is to do it through willpower. More than that, when you try to force your way to things, you actually cause the universe to work against you. You’ll find out how to turn this around in Habit #3: Ease. That’s why, instead of vision boards and mantras, the habits in this book focus on fine-tuning your own emotional processes. I start small and build outward. In making these habits part of your life, you will feel subtle changes in how you experience and understand emotion at first and open yourself up to be able to have peak emotional experiences more often. What you really want is to learn how to feel amazing more of the time. This book will give you the tools to do just that. Please read this book in order. It’s not incredibly long, and the habits are set up in a logical sequence. With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s move into the first habit. Habit 1: Emotional Awareness Emotional awareness is the skill of knowing how you’re feeling. I know this sounds like an obvious thing, but in reality, most people aren’t consciously aware of how they feel at a given point in time. This is because you tend to only know how you’re feeling when you’re really feeling it. You can probably remember the last time you were really mad, sad, or feeling ecstatic. People who experience these peak states are often called emotional. The implies that people who do the opposite aren’t emotional. This is a bit of misnomer, because we’re all emotional beings. More than that, the term, “emotional” implies that the person isn’t in control of their emotions, which further implies that showing too much emotion is a bad thing. This can lead you to want to ignore or bury your emotions. This is the wrong path. Instead, you can make peace with the emotions you feel. You can learn to recognize them without letting them control you. But, you have to acknowledge them first. This skill will teach you how to recognize the subtler emotions you feel. You want to recognize them, because you ultimately want to be able to influence the flow of your emotions. Why? If you wait until you really know you’re feeling angry, sad, irritated, frustrated, or overwhelmed, it’s far too late to do anything about it in that moment. Really. Which is why emotional awareness is such an important skill to have. With emotional awareness, you’ll make every other habit in this book far easier to accomplish. There’s a reason why Abraham-Hicks always says to, “focus on the feeling.” Why Does Emotional Awareness Matter? The law of attraction responds to your vibration. Your vibration, for the sake of simplicity, is dictated by your emotion. You already know that your emotion can only be influenced sometimes. In one moment it can be like pushing against an angry river flowing the opposite direction. In others, it can be like coasting down a stream that turns into a cascade of joy. People who misunderstand how to apply the law of attraction simply say, “Think positive!” That’s like saying, “Just make more money!” in response to impending bankruptcy. While it’s technically accurate, it’s not functionally accurate. It’s not a useful thing to hear at the time. Honestly, do me a favor and don’t listen to people who give advice like that. Because your emotions flow in different habitual ways, you have an ocean of differing vibrations in your life. These differing vibrations cause waves in your reality. Influencing how you feel is a lot more like sailing than it is turning on a light switch. You don’t choose to feel better and it’s done. You can get where you want to go, but it’s hardly a straight line. If it were, you wouldn’t be reading this book. Your tool to navigate all this is your current point of focus. Your current point of focus is based on what you are thinking right now, which you can alter and change. But, your point of focus is like a sailboat, not a teleporter. Getting where you want to go emotionally seems simple on paper, but the law of attraction is constantly responding to your vibrations. Most people aren’t deliberate with how they feel, so they tend to respond to whatever is happening around them. This is like trying to sail without controlling your boat whatsoever, hoping for the chaotic sea of vibrations to take you where you want to go. So, when good things happen, they feel good. When bad things happen, they feel bad. People who haven’t practiced vibrational sensitivity are only conditionally happy. This means they can only feel in response to external conditions. While your emotions influence what manifests in your life, the emotion you feel in a certain moment is actually an indicator of the vibration that you’re currently practicing. This is a slightly more complex way of understanding your emotions’ relationship to your vibrations, but when you think of your emotion as an indicator, you’ll start to detect vibrations that you already practice by default. So, to get where you want to go emotionally, you have to learn how to navigate the current vibrational patterns of your life. In sailing, you have to be able to read the wind and the waves while using your current focus to keep yourself moving in the right direction towards your destination. To do this with your emotions, it requires vibrational sensitivity. Why You Have to Learn Vibrational Sensitivity Before Anything Else Vibrational sensitivity, just like learning how to drink wine, is about detecting subtle things that are going on. In this case, you want to detect your subtle emotional states. The following habits in this book are about deliberately practicing an emotional state that leads to a desired vibration. How will you know if you’ve succeeded in practicing those feeling states without knowing how you feel right now? How will you know if you’ve shifted how you feel if you don’t know where you started? It’s like throwing a dart at a dartboard with a blindfold on after being spun around 6 times. You can’t actually hit the target deliberately if you don’t see it and don’t know where you started. You also can’t feel something deliberately if you aren’t aware of how it feels to do so. Once you understand how to do this, you won’t just be better at the other habits, you’ll be able to reduce your own stress level, give other people clear boundaries for your emotions, and just generally be more emotionally healthy. Why Emotional Health is So Important Being emotionally healthy doesn’t seem as sexy as having a Porsche or being a celebrity, but actually it’s one of the most crucial parts of a happy life. If you’re emotionally healthy, you’ll be able to handle manifesting bigger things, because you’ll have the tools with which to handle bigger shifts in your life. In fact, one of the reasons you haven’t manifested huge things yet is that you’re not emotionally ready for them. This is not to say that you’re not mature. It’s simply that you don’t know how to deliberately practice the vibration of what you want consistently enough to have it come into your reality. What if you only make $20,000 a year but keep getting into debt? Do you think you would automatically be able to handle an extra $100,000 a year without a different mindset or different tools? People who win the lottery end up having the same level of pre-lottery-winning income a few years later. Ironically, your debts would just keep getting bigger even though you had more resources. So, the key is learning how to experience more of the emotions you want in your life now, regardless of circumstances. This starts with knowing what you’re already feeling. Emotional awareness and healthiness is actually the backbone of how you will manifest more things into your life. How to Detect Your Own Subtle Feelings This book is about habits, so it’s about practical advice you can do today. Having said that, emotional awareness is something that becomes more effective the more you practice it. After all, how often do you experience emotions? How many emotions do you experience in a day? Most likely, a lot. But don’t worry about recognizing every emotion you feel every moment. The reason this is a practice is because it’s a specific time where you choose to be more aware of your emotions than usual. Then, you can let yourself off the hook for the rest of the day. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself trying too hard too often at first. This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about incremental baby steps. Just 10% more emotional awareness in your life is going to have profound implications on the rest of your life. On top of that, there’s no finish line for this skill. There will always be room for improvement. As Abraham-Hicks says, “You can’t get it wrong and you’ll never get it done.” Believe it or not, this quote is something that is supposed to make you feel relief. If you still want to get an A at manifesting, know that by practicing all these habits, you’ll learn to take the pressure off yourself. Here is how to do it once per day. Feel free to expand this practice to more of your day as it feels good to you. Identify a habit that you do every day that involves writing. Do you write to-do lists? Do you check your calendar? Do you write emails in the morning? Anything that involves writing is good. Put a note in that space that is unmistakable. On the note write, “How are you feeling?” Make sure to have an easy way to record your thoughts. This can be a file on your desktop, a notebook next to your bed, or a notes section on your calendar. Write how you are feeling. Make sure to write a few sentences. This isn’t a status update where you use a one word label, like “Happy,” or, “Tired.” Here’s an example: “I’m feeling good. I’m feeling energized and in the flow. I’m feeling like I’ve got a little bit of nervous energy. I’m feeling kind of anxious like I want to go outside. I’m feeling pretty good, but not terribly relaxed. Maybe antsy is the word.” Instead of describing an exact emotion, you want to describe the change from one emotion to another. Emotions are fluid and they change. Notice that I said I was, “In the flow”, and also, “Antsy.” I’m not contradicting myself, because as I wrote my emotions shifted. A few things may happen when you start to do this: You won’t feel like writing. Especially if you’re not in habit of writing, it may be hard to sit down to write. How to get in the habit of writing is beyond the scope of this book, but to offer a few pointers: Don’t worry about writing well and don’t edit yourself. If you’re just getting started with a daily writing habit, recognize that it’s hard at first and gets easier over time. If writing is really the thing that feels weird, then perhaps just speaking this exercise will do. If you speak your emotional flow, then make sure to spend the equivalent amount of time that it would take to write two to three sentences. But let’s be real. Two to three sentences? Do you text, write emails, or write status updates? This habit is not even that much work. So if you find yourself having trouble with this, then the real culprit is probably: You have a hard time getting in touch with your feelings. That’s totally fine and it’s the reason we’re doing this in the first place. In general, our society does not place value on people being in touch with their feelings. The concept of being, “Touchy-feely” is kind of looked-down upon as a weak quality in people. You may have some weird beliefs around that. If so, just give this habit a try. You don’t have to tell anyone about this. It can be just between you and me.
