Arguingagainsttheinterpretationthatmanyofthesemonumentalcivicbuildingswere indeclineorabandonedinthelaterRomanperiod,hedemonstratesthattheyremained purposefulspacesandimportantcentresofurbanlife.Throughadetailedassessment ofthearchaeologyoflateRomantowns,thisbookarguesthatthearchaeologicalframe- workofdeclinedoesnotpermitanadequateandcomprehensiveunderstandingofthe townsduringthisperiod.Movingbeyondtheideaofdecline,thisbookemphasisesa longer-termperspectiveforunderstandingtheimportanceoftownsinthelaterRoman period.
