Kalispell, the county seat, is the state's seventh largest citywith a population of 1 1 ,9 1 7. The city is the trade centerofnorthwest Montana and located at thejunction ofU.S. Highways 2 and 93. The area is renowned for its Flathead cherries and Christmas tree farms. It's also a gateway to GlacierNational Park and located between the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Montana's largest, and the Flathead Indian Reser- vation. According to the U.S. Bureau ofthe Census, median income for Flathead County households in 1989 was $24,145. The county is 5,256.6 square miles in area; 5,098.6 square miles in land area and 1 58.0 in inland water area. County residents experience the four distinct seasons. Average normal monthlytemperatures, forexample in Kalispell, range from an average high of27.0 degrees above in January to 82 above in July.
