---- - 5 - - 6 - Preface de Michael Piechowski This is a much needed book. Patricia Lamare has done a tremendous service to the French-speaking world by providing a clear and concise introduction to the theory that illuminates inner growth process. Dąbrowski was more fluent in French than in English. He did his doc- toral work in Geneva, and went to Paris to hear lectures by Pierre Janet. Many of his seminal ideas were first published in Annales Médico-psychologiques. Years passed and no one in France picked up the thread of his theory until Patricia Lamare discovered his work just a few short years ago. Her book La Théorie de la Désintégration Posi- tive de Dąbrowski is very much in the spirit of his profound understanding of emotional development. The subtitle announces it splendidly: Un autre regard sur la surdouance, la santé mentale et les crises existentielles. Dąbrowski developed his theory in order to bring hope and under- standing to the gifted and creative whose lack of adaptation is looked upon as a weakness but is, in fact, moral strength. He investigated mental health in gifted children and adults. He took the intensity of their emotions, their sensitivity, and tendency toward emotional ex- tremes, as part and parcel of their psycho-physical makeup. In their intensified manner of experiencing, feeling, thinking, and imagining, he perceived a potential for further growth. He saw inner forces at work generating overstimulation, conflict, and pain, but also involving a search for a way through the pain, strife, and disharmony. His theory is about how this takes place. The theory emerged from the neurology and clinical experience of the late 19th and early 20th century. Dąbrowski addressed the problem of the tension of unbearably intense emotional experience that can only be resolved through self-mutilation, suicide, or inner transforma- tion. He identified the potential for advanced development in the qualities of heightened experiencing (overexcitabilities) and in the “own forces” of autonomous self-determination. Dabrowski’s idea that not everything that looks pathological is a dysfunction or malad- justment has yet to be more widely understood. Dąbrowski’s mission in developing his theory was to depathologize the characteristics of intense agonizing experience and instead to - 7 - show that what used to be called psychoneurosis and thought of as mental illness is, in fact, a process of personal growth. Positive disin- tegration may look like an illness, and it feels like an illness to the individual suffering through it, but it is a natural process of inner transformation just like the caterpillar turning into a chrysalis that through profound inner upheavals turns into a butterfly. The caterpil- lar’s positive disintegration inside the chrysalis proceeds on automatic pilot, but for their inner transformation human beings need a pilot, one that is good and wise—a therapist or counselor who understands the nature of the process of advanced development. Patricia Lamare recognizes the validity of identifying potential for growth toward psychological health amidst existential anxieties, inner conflicts, and depressions. The well-conceived diagrams in the book facilitate grasping the essential concepts of the theory. She places the theory in the context of other psychological, philosophical, and spiri- tual perspectives. In this way the reader learns what is truly original that the theory offers. Distinctive to the theory of positive disintegration is a developmental concept of mental health. It is this concept that reorients psychothe- rapy with individuals, especially gifted and creative ones, struggling with inner conflicts and existential anxieties and depressions. In the last part of the book Patricia Lamare shares her insights into the deve- lopmental issues of gifted children, adolescents and adults. She makes a particular point of showing the emotional differences be- tween boys and girls, men and women, each requiring a different approach. And she also includes insights into the spiritual aspect of emotional development. Gifted individual undergoing existential cris- es may discover the spiritual nature of their quest. Patricia Lamare approaches this subject knowledgeably, with sensitivity while drawing on a broad range of sources. Patricia Lamare has supplemented her book with inspiring excerpts, letters, and poems from Dąbrowski, Einstein, Mandela, Mnouchkine, and Medeiros that help the reader recognize elements of their own personal growth.
