Welcome to our mid-summer edition of Kindred Spirit. In this issue we are once again publishing our yearly Retreat Guide, in which we round up reviews and listings of some of the wonderful retreats on offer in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and abroad to inspire you to dedicate some time to yourself and your spiritual practice. You can find our 15-page showcase from p.31 — be sure not to miss it. As well as inspiring you to develop your spiritual and self-care practices on retreat, this issue will gently guide you into coming into your own power as the summer sun beats on. The issue opens with a lovely piece from George Lizos on protecting your energy out in nature with help from the elemental spirits (p.12), and Danu Forest returns with folklore, rituals and recipes pertaining to Lughnasadh (p.16), which falls this year on 1 August. Keep your eyes peeled as well for an article on the Japanese art of kintsugi (p.46) from David Olliff, our very own Spiritual Bookshelf columnist. The art form will remind you that not all that is broken is without worth, and that the most unique beauty can come from the most devastating breakages — something we could all do to bear in mind. With wishes for a bountiful summer from all of us here at Kindred Spirit, leah Lassen [email protected] JOINING US IN THIS ISSUE... * George Lizos * David Olliff * Katie Ness p.12, Protecting p.46, Kintsugi p 4, Poetry and Your Energy Best Advice: the Priestess Best Advice: When you have Best Advice: Gratitude sets my climbed a mountain Ifyou don’t ask, mood at the start and it turns into a you don’t get. I hold Clarissa Pinkola Estés in high esteem, having attended her training in person. | now run workshop retreats exploring the stories of the book through creative methods, with the next taking place in October. So much wisdom and compassion! | urge every reader to read her book to access the depth of your soul and the wild instinct of the feminine, which is constantly being eroded in modern culture. ISABELLA FLORSCHUTZ Native flowers | couldn’t help noticing that although we are at the most naturally floriferous time of the year in the UK, the model on the cover of your May/ June edition (issue 180) is surrounded by some very artificial- looking flowers, clutching what appears to bea tender greenhouse flower and with florist’s flowers in her hair. There is not a single native wild flower or leaf in the picture! | appreciate that it was possibly prepared at an earlier date, but a few primroses, daisies, blossom and leaves from native wild trees would have perhaps sent a more genuine pictorial message. Just a thought. KATHLEEN ASKEW ED: Thank you for your feedback, Kathleen — we always love to know whether our covers resonate with our readers or not, and we'll be sure to take your feedback on board for future issues of Kindred Spirit. If any readers would like to give feedback on specific covers, do get in touch with us at [email protected]. Article correction | was reading Susie Kearley’s article on the left-hand and right-hand paths of spirituality in the March/April edition of Kindred Spirit (issue 179, p.26). She covers a paragraph concerning Dion Fortune, saying that ‘he’ follows the right-hand path, which | was a bit surprised at. It could be a proof- reading error, but Dion Fortune was female. Let’s hope she didn’t see that! LORNA HEATH ED: Thank you so much to the eagle-eyed readers who spotted and made us aware of this error. Dion Fortune was a highly influential female figure within the occultist and spiritual movements and we regret that this error made it through to printing, but are grateful to our wonderful readers who, as ever, prioritise the distribution of truth and accuracy. During one of the soul retrievals I received, it appeared so beautifully that I will be writing more about it. Later that day I saw that my work had been published in Kindred Spirit: my heart sings with such joy at this! It dawns on me now that perhaps all that we love, all we are drawn to, are not things to do once we’ve done all else we feel we ‘should’ do, but instead are the very purpose for why we are here. To follow the breadcrumbs of all that we love. I feel deeply now that these wins, these triumphant moments of joy, are just the beginning of what’s to come.
