With re- newed generous funding from Denmark's National Research Foun- dation, the Centre has been able to pursue its goals this year more rigorously than ever. The clearest point of continuity between the old and the new grant period is the work on the new critical edition of Kierkegaard's writings, S0ren Kierkegaards Skrifter. In November 1999 volume 6 of the new edition, containing Stages on Life's Way (1845), appeared along with its accompanying commentary volume K6. The challeng- ing job of establishing the text and writing commentaries for the first volumes of Kierkegaard's journals and papers has occupied the philological department of the Centre for much of the latter part of 1999. These volumes are scheduled for publication in autumn of this year. The Centre's annual Research Seminar constitutes another impor- tant point of continuity. The present number of the Yearbook fea- tures the papers given at last year's Research Seminar, held from August 4-6, 1999. The seminar was dedicated to the edifying dis- courses from the years 1843-44 and Three Discourses on Imagined Occasions, which, of course, constitute the content of volume 5 of S0ren Kierkegaards Skrifter. The hope was that the seminar would encourage further research on these discourses, which have been generally neglected in the history of the scholarship, although they play such a significant role in Kierkegaard's authorship as a whole and in his conception of himself as a religious writer. The present volume with these articles represents one of the most extensive treatments of these discourses to date. Moreover, many of the pa- pers can be regarded as setting forth new research results on the ba- sis of the philological and commentary work from volume 5 and K5 of S0ren Kierkegaards Skrifter. VI Preface Following this initial section of papers from the Research Semi- nar, there is a section with short articles on the history of the recep- tion of these discourses in the different countries and language groups. These articles give a brief overview of the main works treat- ing the edifying discourses and the main interpretive trends in the respective languages. The next two sections of this number of the Yearbook are dedi- cated to some of the international conferences and seminars ar- ranged by the Centre. Specifically, the third section features three pa- pers from the first ever francophone seminar held at the Centre. In an attempt to establish better contacts with the rich tradition of Kier- kegaard research in France and the rest of the francophone world, the Centre organized and sponsored a colloquium entitled, "Silhou- ettes de Kierkegaard," which took place at the Centre from Novem- ber 26-27, 1999. Three papers from this event are featured here. The Centre hopes to establish a regular series of seminars and colloquia specifically for francophone Kierkegaard research, which will lead to closer ties between the French Kierkegaard community and the Cen- tre. This first seminar represents a significant expansion of the Cen- tre's activities and marks an important step in its internationalization. The next section features three papers given at the conference, "Crossroads in Kierkegaard's Thinking," held in Budapest, Hungary from October 13-15,1999. This conference was organized by the Cen- tre and the Department of Aesthetics at the Eötvös Loränd Univer- sity in Budapest and was sponsored by the Danish Cultural Institute. The main goal of this event was the promotion of Hungarian Kierke- gaard research. This conference featured talks from many recognized Hungarian and international Kierkegaard researchers and had as its main themes: Kierkegaard and German Idealism, Kierkegaard and Existentialism, and Kierkegaard's Aesthetics. This event served as the occasion for the planning of the new Hungarian Kierkegaard Society and for the inauguration of a Kierkegaard library and resource cen- tre in Budapest, called the Kierkegaard Cabinet. This conference rep- resents a significant step in the Centre's attempt to cultivate Kierke- gaard scholarship from Central and Eastern Europe and to integrate it into the mainstream research. As usual, the final section of the Yearbook is dedicated to articles concerning philology or other aspects of the Centre's publication ac- tivities. In this number we feature a text that explores the questions of Kierkegaard translation. This article is of particular relevance now that the Centre is organizing and coordinating major translation pro- Preface VII jects of S0ren Kierkegaards Skrifter into Chinese, German, English, French and Spanish. A final article is included which discusses the highly demanding commentary work that is currently being done in connection with S0ren Kierkegaards Skrifter as illustrated by the work on The Concept of Irony. We would like to acknowledge our deep sense of gratitude to the Danish National Research Foundation for their continuing support of the Centre. We would also like to thank Verlag Walter de Gruyter for the productive continuing Zusammenarbeit. The editors also grate- fully acknowledge Richard Purkarthofer for his help with various as- pects of the editorial work on this volume of the Yearbook.
