Preface To 2nd edition This publication is the second edition of my previous publication; ‘My Masters Words’, written in 2003. These publications come as a promise to my teacher; Pt. Sanjay Rāth, who wanted the tradition of Jyotiṣa to be known and recognized in India as well as abroad. As solicited by the readers, the book in its second edition has been expanded to in- clude much more information on Pañcāñga. Herein each limb of the Pañcāñga has been elaborated upon based on the work and teachings of Pt. Sanjay Rāth. Every section of the Pañcāñga chapter has been expanded upon. In sections where this authors own observations come to fore it has been clearly mentioned. However, it must be clearly mentioned that the entire knowledge existing in this book has arisen due to the teachings of my Jyotiṣa Guru Pt. Sanjay Rāth. Initially an entire book on Pañcāñga had been planned, spanning two hundred pag- es in its raw form before deciding to add select portions of it to the second edition of this book. In subsequent chapters care has been taken to correct previous layout and scripting errors and improving language. Some charts have been removed to avoid repetition while some have been added, in select sections, to add more detail and understand- ing of the principles at hand. Nine years have passed since the contents of this book first were written, and in this time through learning the deeper tenants and principles of Jyotiṣa through Mahaṛṣi Parāśara Horā Śastra and Mahaṛṣi Jaimini Kṛtam Upadeśa Sutram, as taught in the tra- dition, certain sections of the book have been refined to suit and ease the learning of Jyotiṣa. Admittedly this book is like a small creek in the ocean of knowledge that is Jyotiṣa and this author hopes that students earlier as well as in the future will benefit from the knowledge amassed herein. In agreement with the previous publisher, Sagittarius Publications, the current edi- tion has been published by Shri Garuda and RĀMA Publications. नमः सवित्रे जगदरेकचक्शुषरे जगत्प्रसूती स्थितत ना् हरेतिरे। त्यीमयाय तत्गुणात््म धारिणरे वििञ्चि नािायण ्ङ्किात््मन॥् Introduction I, Visti Larsen, born to Kaj and Maymuna Larsen on November 21st 1981 at 6 AM in Nairobi, Kenya. Grandson of Christian and Agathe Larsen as well as Ali Fakih and Fatma Swaleh. In tribute to my Guru Sanjay Rath and the lineage of Śrī Acyutānanda Dāsa of Oris- sa, I hereby present this book, in its second edition, as a fruit of my learning. Publication This publication is the result of a promise to my teacher, namely to teach on to oth- ers, what I have learned. The book is a contribution to the aspiring astrologers, with knowledge gained both from my personal association with my Guru, and the ap- plication of the same knowledge in my own experiences with my clientele. This book is structured to enable beginners and intermediate level astrologers gravi- tate to an advanced comprehension and competence, emulating the hightened pace that I was exposed to under the tutelage of my Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath. To work on the core roots of the subject, the first chapter deals with the ‘Pañca- añga’, or the five limbs of the Vedic calendar. This particular area of Jyotiṣa is often overlooked due to lack of knowledge in application on part of the astrologer, and also the idea that it is merely a calendar system, and hence overlooked completely by astrologers following the Western Astrology System. To give a more practical use of the pañcāñga, I have introduced some very useful methods of application to identify flaws in the quality of time, and how it relates to the chart. Suffice to say, that this is ‘only the tip of the iceberg’. This chapter may seem diffi- cult for beginners, and I do recommend students to give themselves adequate time to understand this. This chapter is however given first, as this is the first thing that an astrologer is taught to see before analyzing the chart… the reader will appreciate why, after reading it. The subsequent chapters deal with more commonly known concepts, such as Gra- ha, Rāśi, Bhāva, Kāraka, etc. however to avoid a repetition of already available lit- erature, I have added a deeper understanding to aspects of the topic which are lesser known, such as Māraṇa Kāraka Sthāna, Bhāva and Graha Tithi, use of day/ night births, planetary castes and the Varṇadā Lagna, Upagraha – just to mention some topics under the Graha chapter. In a similar vein, I have given some deeper understanding and principles on the use of the Rāśi as well as the Bhāva, and a par- ticularly important topic, namely Sambandha or relationships. Two topics which are very close to heart among the members of Sri Jagannātha Centre are Ārūḍha and Kāraka. I have devoted a chapter to each in an attempt to establish a stronger foundation for the use of these techniques, and also an idea of their importance. In fact the entire book deals very strongly with the use of the Ārūḍhas. Four chapters are devoted to the twelve Bhāvas. Each bhāva has been picked up and with it some extremely practical and repeatable techniques are shown which are not mentioned in the modern Jyotiṣa books. The last chapter is devoted to the Nārāyaṇa Daśā which is the hall mark of the Jai- mini Sutras, and one of my personal favourites. It should however, not be assumed that this Daśā system is the only one used in this tradition. In fact Pt. Jagannāth Rath, the grandfather of Pt. Sanjay Rath, was fond of Vimśottari Daśā, which he used down to a precision of 6 sub-levels in his predictions! Yet, he used to calculate Nārāyaṇa Daśā mentally to confirm the same. These Daśā systems are but a few of the many Daśā systems learnt in the paramparā, but to begin with giving the aspir- ing astrologers a sidestep from the more commonly used Vimśottari Daśā (or the Aṣtottari Daśā used in eastern India), I have given some practical use of Nārāyaṇa Daśā. Acknowledgement I would like to thank my Guru, Sanjay Rath, for having devoted time and energy to teaching and encouraging the next generation of astrologers, with the knowledge from the paramparā of Śrī Acyutānanda Dāsa. He is further to thank for making the front cover of the book. My thanks go to the members of Śrī Jagannāth Centre, for having established a e-forum for learning, to help the learning process for aspir- ing jyotiṣas, through intellectual discussions and serious application of scriptural knowledge. For participation the forum can be found through: http://srijagannath. org. Further, I would like to acknowledge show my gratitude for the tedious and de- tailed work of Smt. Sarbani Rath in enabling this work to be in its present form. Finally my gratitude goes to the entire staff of Sagittarius Publications which made this book available and worked towards enabling the knowledge of Jyotiṣa to be available to all. I offer this book for the benefit of all astrologers.
