With that said, it was good news this week that Montana State University has achieved initial success in drilling exploratory wells in the Kevin Dome formation. There, university researchers are looking at the feasibility of the geological structure for holding carbon dioxide gas in perpetuity. The dome is apparently composed of porous rocks and soils with an impermeable layer above and if tests prove success- ful, it could become a depository for CO2 emissions that can be cap- tured from coal burning processes. We like the idea that Montana is taking a lead in looking for solu- tions to the bad side of coal fired generation. For the near future, there aren’t many options for meeting the energy needs of the nation and coal seems to be a preferred fuel for many states. Some chose to ignore the environmental impacts, some take the exact opposite stand. We feel the solution lies in good science so that as much as possible coal can be burned as clean as possible, thereby helping to provide a reliable energy supply with minimal impacts. In that light, a recent 60 Minutes story looked at the tremendous cost overruns of the F-35 fighter jet, the sophisticated weapon that is supposed to take the place of many of the other combat airplanes the armed services employs. A wonderful piece of technology and innova- tion, it unfortunately follows the script of many governmental projects, in that it is vastly behind schedule and has experienced major cost overruns. The program stated the budget is over by $180 billion and the plane is not yet ready for delivery. We don’t question the need to provide the best resources to the nation’s defense, but it caused us to think that if just half, or a quar- ter or a tenth of that cost overrun was placed into the hands of the Keeping in Touch nation’s colleges and universities, to further study ways to capture coal burning emissions, wouldn’t that bring results. If a share of those funds were sent to Montana, it could advance by Representative Pat Ingraham the education and careers of a number of the state’s best and brightest students. Needless to say, the “Welcome to Montana” sign was photographed more today than it probably ever has been.” These were the words from Scott Looney’s journal, who was one of 25 bicyclists making their way from Seattle to Washington D.C. The cycling effort is called ‘Journey of Hope’ which was created by long distance biking enthusiasts Push America. The group’s efforts raise money and awareness for people with disabilities and they have been pass- ing through Sanders County for ten years. The fraternal organization hopes to change the way society views those with disabilities and improve the public’s view of fraternal orders – like Pi Kappa Phi, which founded Push America in 1977. According to participants, although funds raised are invaluable, just as important is an increased awareness of the amazing things people with disabilities can do, as Courtesy photo by Karen Knutson opposed to focusing on what they can’t.
