Arbaud Musee d'Arbaud, Aix Orthography is a problem in studying seventeenth-century France. Not only does the spelling differ from modern usage, but so do accents, capitalization, and punctuation; all were a matter of great personal freedom. Modern rules have been followed, and quota tions have been translated into modern English with an attempt to retain some of the flavor of seventeenth-century French. Names have been spelled as they were by their owners according to holo graph signatures, and for this reason some individuals appear un der their family names, some under their titles, some with or with out a partitive. χ
