Th ere Heller’s extended joke joins other celebrated fi ctions that will be forgotten, including On the Road, Beloved, and the sacred seven Harry Potter tediums. Th ere are twenty or so contributors to this volume who do not agree with me, but that does not disturb the aged canonical critic, the pariah of his self-slain profession. I can single out Robert Brustein, Christopher Buckley, and Sanford Pinsker for keeping some sense of balance in this volume. Alas, I myself fi nd nothing in Catch-22 that might provoke balance. It will not last, and there’s an end on it. ix
