Needless to say, without their generous assistance the appearance of this book would not have been possible. The two persons to whom I owe the greatest gratitude are Professor J.H. Charlesworth, the George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Princeton Theological Seminary; and Pro- fessor M.S. Lattke, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity Studies at the University of Queensland. These two scholars were most influential in my development as a student at Princeton and at the Uni- versity of Queensland. I thank Professor Charlesworth, one of my thesis examiners, for his encouragement to publish this study in the Supplement series of the Journal for the Study of the New Testament. My deepest appreciation also goes to Professor Lattke for acting as my Doktorvater at the University of Queensland. Professor Lattke provided exceptional supervision throughout my research program, and also showed an interest in my own academic development that was more than his duties required. I learned tremendously from his meti- culous scholarship and immense knowledge. In addition, I would like to thank Professor P. Allen, Dr R.E. Strelan, Dr A. Stimpfle and Dr M. Harding. Professor Allen of the Australian Catholic University provided encouragement through most of my doctoral studies while I was working as her research assistant. Dr Strelan read the final manuscript of my thesis and made valuable suggestions for improving it. Dr Stimpfle of Augsburg University and Dr Harding, Dean of the Australian College of Theology, not only acted as examiners of the thesis but also gave constructive advice towards its publication. Of course, any weakness remaining in this 8 Johannine Ecclesiology book is due to myself alone, and in no way reflects on the expertise of these excellent scholars. Finally, I would like the thank the staff at Sheffield Academic Press for their expertise in preparing my manuscript for publication.
