There are still many things that remain unknown, but if some of the results of my work will lead the discussion in new directions, I will have accomplished my goal. A main thesis in the following discussion is that the prophet has not borrowed motifs and ideas from the Canaanite cultus, as has sometimes been advocated. Rather, the book of ]oel describes what was going on in the ]erusalem temple cultus in his own time. I wish to thank Reverend lohn R. Donahue, 5.]., and Reverend lohn W. Brubaker for their help on the complexities of English composition and for retyping the manuscript. A.S.O.R. East ] erusalem, December 1969 G. W. AHLSTRÖM
